OOS Accepted D Must Visit this Friday!

My daughter was delighted to find out that she was accepted to W&M, but the only time we can travel (from Ohio) to visit is this Friday and Sat. We'll be driving and arriving around 11 am on Friday. We have so little time to plan this visit. Any advice about things we must do, see, ask? I will call admissions, but thought I would also ask here. Wondering if there are any tours being conducted during that time. What a whirlwind, and since this is D's most expensive choice, very nerve-racking!

We offer a tour at 2:30 p.m. on Friday afternoon and 10:00 a.m. Saturday morning. They are unfortunately no admitted student events until next Monday, April 11 but you can certainly get a feel for campus. We’d also encourage you to visit a class Friday afternoon ([William & Mary - Classroom Visitation](Shadow a Student & Class Visits | William & Mary)), attend one of the slew of on-campus events on Friday night ([William & Mary Events](http://events.wm.edu/2011/4/8/)) or Saturday ([William & Mary Events](http://events.wm.edu/2011/4/9/)), eat lunch in a dining hall and just talk to students on campus and learn more about W&M.

Thank you so much for these links. Exactly the info we needed. Looks like lots of interesting activities to choose from over the weekend!

Thanks again!

I would also recommend dinner at The Fat Canary! Very good and walking distance from campus!

We’ll try it! Thanks, crazymom! Feeling so nervous about the huge decisions that must be made in the next couple weeks…

The Fat Canary is certainly good food but not an off-campus spot students traditionally dine (unless their parents are visiting) because it is on the pricier end. You may want to consider dining off campus where students go (the Delis just across from Zable stadium or some of the restaurants in the NewTown area (about a mile from campus).

My kids usually eat at Aroma’s, The Cheese Shop and Nawab if off campus.

I’m jotting down these names. Thanks for the advice.

Does anyone know if it’s hard to park on campus or have any advice about where to go to park?

Buckeye, In Colonial Williamsburg there is a main shopping area called Merchant Square; to the right of the area across the street is a paid parking lot. We often park here when visiting. It is a short walk to the admission office and Old Campus(1-2 blocks). I don’t know about parking on campus, but I suspect folks need a sticker these days.

Great parking advice - thank you! Can’t believe we leave tomorrow, no reservations yet, have barely planned! I so appreciate this board.

I THINK you will be able to park on campus after 5pm on Friday (you can check the parking services website).

Prior to that, there might be some spots reserved for the admissions building over next to it. There are also sometimes parallel parking spots on Jamestown and Richmond Road (some might have meters).

we used to stay at the Hospitality House when we wanted to focus on the college itself. Haven’t been there in two years though. It was a bit shabby in all honesty compared to the newer tourist hotels a couple miles away but it is in a great location for park and walk to campus which is what is important. Son had 8am meetings and we were able to order breakfast to be delivered to our room early which was a blessing. Your daughter can simply walk from the hotel to anywhere she wants to go on campus from this hotel and you all can meet up anyplace easily as you separate during the day.

and congratulations on your OOS admission to a great college in America!

When you arrive tomorrow you can come to our office and we will give you a parking pass for the day and you can park in our back parking lot if space is available. You will not need a parking pass on the weekend.

The Hospitality House is the closest to campus and they generally have a slightly discounted rate for those visiting the Admission Office.

Safe travels and we hope you enjoy your time on campus.

If you have time, or if the parents get bored (or in the way), don’t forget to explore the area - CW, Jamestown, and Yorktown are all close-in, Busch Gardens is open, and of course, Dog Street, maybe join the cult of the Bread Ends at the Cheese Shop, check out New Town, hit the Muscarelle museum if you have the interest. (I personally like Jamestown, the island and the archeological digs, not necessarily the “Settlement” museum.)

But still, I love to walk the Sunken Garden on a pretty Spring day, wander around in the Wren and listen for ghosts, just basically follow my nose - it’s truly a beautiful and walkable campus.

We are in the same boat! Accepted, but can’t make the Admitted Student Day. We can only visit this Saturday (the 9th) from Illinois. Also visiting UVA and GWU in a crazy three days.

I saw the recommendation to do the 10 a.m. campus tour; event schedule did not hold much promise. Is there any other recommendation to get a feel for College?

Thanks!

Relay for Life runs into Saturday and is tonight. Depending on how early you are in town, that would be a great place to be able to talk to students. There are often intramurals going on, so if you see games, just stop and talk to the students. Chances are that one would show you a room, etc.

There do appear to be some promising events tomorrow including the men’s and women’s soccer spring games, late night laser tag in the Sunken Garden and a documentary presented at the Kimball.

If these events do not appeal to you we encourage you to simply walk around campus and chat with current students who excited and happy to talk with admitted students and answer questions.

Thank you, we’ve arrived in town and are looking forward to the infosession and tour tomorrow a.m., and we’ll definitely take time to “hang out” and talk!

Hope you enjoyed your visit. Weather wasn’t great on Friday and Saturday but if you like campus in the rain, imagine how much you’ll love it on a beautiful day.

Feel free to post any lingering questions here or on the parent portion of the welcome website.

Enjoyed our visit very much, thanks, and learned much from the infosession and tour. It’s a beautiful campus and town.

Son felt a bit the “fish out of water” as we were the only midwesterners on hand and almost all the guides were from Va. But I reminded him that a third of the students are from somewhere else and bring geographic diversity to the mix.
