OOS merit aid?

Since UM tacks on $31K per year for OOS students, it becomes sort of ridiculous for non-rich people to think about sending their kids there. As a non-rich person (who makes enough not to qualify for financial aid) with a bright OOS kid, I’m wondering what kind of MERIT aid my son could expect from UM (if he even gets in). His stats:

ACT: 33
GPA: 4.21w
Class rank 9/359
marching band section leader, first chair jazz trombone, two-time captain of academic team.

I’ve been assuming he’ll get no where near enough merit aid to make it comparable to our in-state choice, OSU. But I’d love to have more info. UM is far-and-away his No. 1 choice.

Thanks!

They rarely give merit to any student. But they will help with financial aid if you qualify.

Oof.

Thanks. I’m almost positive we don’t qualify for financial aid. Apparently we can afford $45,000 a year! Hah!

They give some merit to OOS, but it is highly competitive and so not a given even with great stats. In addition to the largest university scholarships (like Shipman and Stamps), most colleges - like LSA and COE - offer a few merit scholarships in range of $5-20k/yr. In COE, e.g., they have the Scholarship of Honor which is $20k if you are OOS (I believe it’s $12k if you are in state). Not sure how many of these they give each year, but they are material enough to at least put a dent in that OOS tuition.

Most merit scholarships consider grades, test scores, ECs, recommendations and essays, and some require EA application. Short answer: merit aid is possible OOS, but not probable. See the various UM financial aid websites for more info (the university page and the one for whatever college your son is applying).
