Hey! I was just wondering how good the out of state financial aid is for georgia tech. Do they even give need based aid for OOS students? I can comfortably (with no debt) pay about 20k a year for college. Is it reasonable to expect Gatech to approach this number with aid?

If you can cover $20,000 / yr without debt, how do you expect to qualify for need based aid (at Tech or anywhere)?

I’m going to go with Burdell on this one…

I mean… Is the space pope reptilian?

Uh…I definatly qualify for need based aid at most places. Average private college costs about 50k a year, witch equates to 120k of debt. From gatech, with no aid, I’d be graduating with 60k debt, witch is way too much

I was thinking of posting a similar topic, as I would actually need OOS need-based aid. We couldn’t afford 5k a year without debt. How is GT with aid?

Just because you think it’s too much doesn’t mean that you have a “need”.

Indeed. In the context of financial aid, need is the difference between cost of attendance (CoA) and expected family contribution (EFC). If CoA > EFC, then on paper, you qualify for need-based financial aid. If CoA < EFC, then your “need” is zero. As a separate matter, you may qualify for merit-based aid, which has nothing to do with need-based financial aid.

Regarding the questions, I do not know for absolutely certainty as I do not work for admissions or the financial aid office. Anecdotally, I’d wager that most out-of-state students do not get much, if any, need-based aid other than loans.

I beg to differ. My daughter is OOS and received fantastic aid. Between the $12k/yr GT grant, work-study, pell grant and the rest covered by a need based MERIT scholarship, it’s costing under $500 out of pocket for the entire year, everything included w/no loans. Tech is being VERY good to her.

I’m not sure how many out-of-state students have received as generous an aid package as your daughter did. About thirty percent of our student body is out-of-state, and I don’t think we have the financial resources to give all or even most of them the level of aid that your daughter has.

Most scholarships are endowed, so the money has to be given to students and is independent (relatively) of the economy. With the vast majority of in-state freshman coming to Tech with HOPE and no financial aid to international students, that money generally goes to out-of-state students.

I type corrected.

As an oos student myself (although my efc is somewhere around 10k) I get about 10k a year as an “GT institutional grant.” I didn’t apply for it, they just give it to me every year. The rest is covered in subisidized/unsubsidized/PLUS loans. Personally I don’t think they’d give you too much if you can pay 20k comfortably, especially if you live off campus in later years (tuition is somewhere around 24k now). But with room and board in your cost of attendance your first year you might get a little something.
