I read several negative reviews on studentsreview.com about Middlebury's student body's acceptance (or lack thereof) of minority communities (including the gay community). Based on reputation alone, however, I hear a lot about the extremely liberal environment of the town of Middlebury and Vermont itself. I also read on insidehighered.com that Middlebury has begun to give preference (or at least some sort of minority status) to gay students in the admissions process. Long story short, I have found several instances of conflicting information and I was wondering if any students or alumni can help me understand the social environment at Middlebury for minorities (homosexuals in particular). How accepted are homosexuals on campus, and is the gay community active and noticeable?
