Opinions of Middlebury

<p>It seems to me that the key factor to evaluate a school in these circumstances is not the racist stupidity of one student but rather the substance of the response of the campus community and the administration. I would never reject a great school like Middlebury because of one racist. That is a societal problem which is not endemic at the college.</p>

<p>Thanks to all of you for responding to my question about race. It is because we loved Middlebury so that we wanted to ask the question. And it is certainly still high on the list! As I said in my last post, the campus attitude towards what happened is what concerned us most. I do think it is important to ask these questions, clarify what happened (we had seen pretty vague references to not only an isolated incident, but references to other problems) and not sweep the issue under the rug. Certainly, race and class issues are everywhere and cannot be ignored.</p>
