For those of you who missed the Barrett Virtual Open House program last week, several of the presentations are now available on the Barrett, The Honors College website. Click on the Admissions tab and then find the link to the virtual open house on the left hand side of the page.

The Barrett Virtual Open House last week was awesome. I highly recommend viewing their online presentations if you are admitted or even considering Barrett for the future!

Wow it seems as though most people have primarily positive things to say about Barrett.
I’m currently a high school Junior, and Barrett is definitely the front runner in my college search. I’d love to hear from prospective students about anything negative they might have experienced. I’m not looking to be dissuaded or anything, but it’s hard to weigh pros and cons if I don’t have any cons to weigh (and Barrett admission advisers obviously aren’t going to wax poetic to me about the bad and the ugly).
I don’t live under a rock, I know ASU is a huge party school, (google ASU parties, you’ll find some impressive stuff) but I don’t necessarily think that’s a bad thing. I doubt anyone will come into my room and drag me to a party, so really, an active party scene is really only a benefit for those who want it and not a detriment for those who don’t. As far as what I would consider bad:
Excessive busy-work in honors classes (I’ve always sucked at homework)
Bad dorms with Auschwitz-guard-like RAs
Horrendous professors with Draconian grading policies

Beyond that I’m pretty flexible, but if any of those things exist at Barrett and no one is posting about them, please, speak up.

i wish i got to see barrett to help make my decision, but being out of state its not easy to come visit.

im a high school senior who got into barrett and will be also going to the Fulton school for engineering. however because they are part of asu, an average school, i also sir’ed to UCSC, to keep that option open.

what do you guys think is better barrett or UCSC? the UC system has a lot of prestige, and i guess so does barrett but ASU doesn’t.

Hi CC, I am a Barrett/ASU engineering alum and I would welcome any questions about the campus/programs. Having just graduated, I look back and feel ASU was the best value for the money. Probably the best thing about ASU was the ease of finding a job. All of the major companies recruit at ASU, and semesterly career fairs make it easy to connect with hundreds of potential employers.

The National Merit Scholars have it made at Barrett. The dorms are nice, the dining hall is the best I’ve ever had (even better than 50k a year private California schools), and you won’t find it for cheaper :-). I’m proud of my peers and what they have accomplished.

Be prepared for extra work in Barrett. There’s quite a bit of it if you want to graduate from the honors program.

Barrett really is the best of both worlds. ASU’s programs are continually rising on the ranking boards, and their prices are steadier than they are in the rest of the country. They definitely try to accommodate their students.

I visited ASU a few years back and I distinctly remember that a lot of coeds were wearing bikini tops. I thought it was a little strange so I went back the very next day just to make sure.

@asuciscokid
how much extra work does barrett give you? does it mean all nighters and tons of studying/stress? and about the ease of finding a job, is it easy just to find a job in Arizona or nationwide? im just wondering that because how well is ASU known outside of AZ?

@sosmenza LOL that sounds great.

sosomenza, funny. When we were there on warm days in Jan and March, I was surprised at the number of people wearing heavy jeans, light jackets, etc. I think it must be because it is not so warm in the buildings people are walking to.

tmtaats, you know you aren’t supposed to SIR 2 schools at the same time?

When my D did Barrett overnight and talked to lots of students, they told her it goes in waves. Sometimes you are really busy and lots of work, and sometimes it slows and you get breaks. So she and some kids watched movies all night, but there was a guy down the hall they wanted to talk to her because he was in same major, who was so swamped that they had to drag them out of room to take a break. The human event classes are pretty intense, but kids love them at the same time they tire of the work. Barrett has a tutor room to help kids with the writing for that class. Lots of kids are taking heavy credit loads, double majors, grad. level classes. They work hard, but they expect to and in a way they like the hard work.
