Opinions on Eagle Rock?

It’s not 1984 anymore, believe it or not a lot has changed in the last 25 years, I’m an Oxy student, and have no fear walking down York at night, or even around Figueroa. Highland Park’s a little rough, sure, but you don’t get jumped for walking out the door. I would also never call it “blighted”. It’s not an architectural haven, but hardly blighted. ER is better is all regards pretty much. Colorado has become unmistakably trendy and so have parts of ER Boulevard. It’s perfectly safe to walk around so long as you’re aware of where you are.

As for campus, it’s incredibly safe. People from the neighborhood don’t crash parties, even off campus ones. There’s an incredibly low incidence of theft in general. Despite your claims, LAPD’s is present so often breaking up parties that people often question out-loud whether they have something better to do - apparently not.

As for rape, it hasn’t happened in my tenure yet (although we had a widely publicized sexual assault last year) and likely won’t. You claim that the administration hushes these things up, but let’s face it - news at Oxy obeys different laws of physics; that’s how quickly it travels. If there was a rape, we’d know. As for the Stewie peeper, I’m begging to think it’s a generational trend. Speaking to an alumna from mid-forties, when Weingart was still an all women’s dorm, she was telling me they used to make a game out of staking out in the hallways to catch the peeper they had - at least on reflection, she thought it was hilarious.

And as a personal note to this comment, “I grew up In South Pasadena and no one in their right mind chooses to go to Eagle Rock and the adjoining Highland Park.” I’m from the Westside. I was coming to ER for all manner of things (mostly food, sometimes concerts and the parks) in high school. People recognize the area for what it is - a largely working class Hispanic neighborhood undergoing gradual but increasing gentrification as it has slowly become an in-city living destination for my generation.

Runrandom

I think it is great you are defending your school but-

I am not talking about 25 years ago, I am talking about now.

What is your response to the 36 reported felonies within a 3/4 mile radius in the past 30 days?

Great you feel safe to walk around the neighborhood, “a long as you are aware of where you are” -meaning what- that you are in Eagle Rock?

Please look at the reports and their locations- armed robberies at York and ER Blvd, multiple thefts, burglaries and auto thefts within blocks of campus- in the past 30 days.

Although you personally have “no fear” walking down York Blvd at night, in light of current circumstances and crime statistics, I would not portray Eagle Rock as safe.

I think you can spin it all you want and try and say Eagle Rock is “trendy”, but as you said, it is a basic working class Hispanic neighborhood in LA - and I stick by my statement that no one in their right mind would go visit the place.

The campus is 100% safe ? - but what about the theft at 1600 Campus Road (Oxy campus address) and several within a block or two of the campus?

You did not define “an incredibly low incidence of theft”. Once a month, a week, a year? Incredibly low compared to…what? Facts don’t lie- please refer back to my posted felony stats. If I had 36 felonies reported within 3/4 of a mile of my home, I would not consider it “safe”

It is great that you ventured over from the west side and I don’t know what your motivation was, and perhaps you had a good time

…but please don’t try to sell Eagle Rock and adjoining Highland Park as some sort of 'happnin place- you really should tell it like it is to all prospective students and their families.

Again, don’t take my word for it- just look at LAPD statistics.
