Hey all,
I was recently accepted into Northeastern University as part of the University Scholars Program, and am seriously considering attending next year (it's pretty hard to turn down full tuition!). My one major concern with the school, however, is that the process of co-ops and internships will limit me academically and force me to devote all of my available time to my major specific courses, without any room for academic exploration. I'd be interested in hearing from current students whether this seems to hold true or not at Northeastern. My tentative major is Chemical Engineering, if that changes anything.

P.S. On a related note, how difficult is it to change school/major at Northeastern, and does being a University Scholar /Honors College member make the process easier/harder/different at all? Thanks!

First, congratulations on the University Scholars Program!

I don’t feel like co-op has limited my ability to explore academically. In fact, my co-ops have led me to take classes outside of my major that I’ve discovered interest me and will help me after college. Your biggest limitation will probably be the fact that you are an engineering major; because of the strict accreditation process, there is not usually a lot of flexibility in engineering programs (and this holds across universities - it’s not just a Northeastern thing). That said, given the USP offer, I am guessing that you will likely be coming in with some AP/IB/dual enrollment credit, which will give you more flexibility.

As for changing majors, it’s usually not a big problem. As long as you have good grades and take the pre-reqs, transferring into most majors is not a problem. (I think international business and some of the health fields like nursing/PT/Pharmacy are the exceptions or are competetive, but I’m not 100% sure on these.) Most people change majors without a problem. In fact, some people even change before they start in the fall. I would also think that you may get a little more leverage with the USP/Honors if it’s necessary, but I don’t think it would be.

@chancesthrowaway, could you tell me your stat? I’m also applying to NEU EA for Chemical Engineering and hoping to get into the USP. Thank you!
