Just want to let people know that there is actually a job title called Optical Engineer. I just found out like a week ago. And there's an optical engineering major at uc davis, and I heard couple graduates from the optical engineering major landed jobs at like lockheed and other companies making same salary as electrical engineers. Is anyone interested in going optical engineering? There's a shortage of optical engineers. I believe you can major in physics if your college doesn't offer optical engineering major.

University in Alabama at Huntsville has an optical engineering program as well.

What exactly would one of these engineers do? Optical drives? Or things like eye examination equipment?

You know those things called computer chips - how do you think the circuits get on there??

it’s a very rewarding career, you design lenses, microscopes, telescopes, LED, lasers, fiber optics, optical disc, dvd, etc… anything that uses light. mainly i been seeing that there is a need for LED optical engineers

you can major in applied physics and get a job as an optical engineer

You can get jobs at Intel, IBM, Nikon, ASML etc.
