Optional Essay

I'm applying RD to Tufts and I'm a little confused about the optional essay-

You can either describe the environment in which you grew up and how it shaped your personal goals or offer an editorial on a topic of your choice. But it also says "There are times when applicants wish to provide additional information about their candidacy but the opportunity to do so is not addressed in any of the essay topics. Please use the optional essay as an invitation to do so."

If I have a really good essay about my Grandma, can I use it? Or is the last point meant for applicants who want to explain a really bad grade, for example, or something off about their application?

Thanks!

I think it can be used in either scenario. If there's something that impacted your grades, then you can use that essay to address that issue (my mom was unemployed for a year, so I talked about how that affected me). If that isn't an issue, I'm pretty sure you can write on essentially anything you want them to know about as long is in essay form.

I had a very similar problem, so I emailed them. They said that it can be about pretty much anything.
