Options for Post-Bacc Students

Hi all, new here. Posted this in MT major too, but wanted to get input on straight theatre as well.

Currently trying to pursue a career in Acting/Theatre. Unfortunately, I didn’t pursue it earlier in life and am now beyond the typical college age. I also already have a BA in Political Science.

I feel like my options are limited. Are there any schools out there with a BA/BFA in Theatre that will take older students who already have a Bachelor’s? Or maybe a Masters for someone without a theatre degree? What about in London?

I kind of figure my only option is going to be studying at independent studios in NYC like Esper, Adler, etc. But I feel like I’m missing out on the well-rounded, combined training found in university theatre programs.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Look at these programs. Pig Iron School is a post-bac program. It and the others all offer actor training programs where you can get college credits. You can still participate even if you don’t need/want the credits. My daughter went to an LAC, and created an independent theater major were she was able to incorporate programs like those below as part of her training (Pig Iron School, Moscow Art Theater Semester, Moscow Art Theater Summer School, and the NTI). You already have a BA, you don’t need another–what you need is actor training. Good luck.

Hey! I’m actually in the exact same position as you. Just completed my BA Hons in Political Science and will be heading into a BFA Acting program come September.

What I did was apply as a Transfer student, as I’ve obviously already completed more than 30 credit hours. From what I understand, it’ll actually help free up some time in my schedule as I’ll have already completed most of my Gen Ed requirements, allowing me to take more Dance / Vocal classes or even some PoliSci classes on the side.

I personally auditioned for BFA programs as I felt I didn’t have enough experience in Theatre to be competitive for MFA. I also auditioned for AADA & considered auditioning for a couple of independent studios that were in town during Unifieds, but in the end decided that what I wanted was the BFA experience.
