Since my family is sick of hearing about colleges, I thought I would start vacation planning for next summer.
I love the Oregon Coast but have not been south of Florence. What are your favorite places to see and stay on the southern coast? What are some must dos? Thanks.
We stayed at Bay Point Landing in Coos Bay, which has a great location on the water:
From there we went to the Oregon Dunes, the oyster beds (Clausen), and Cape Arago (swim at Sunset Beach if you get the chance). The town of Coos Bay is ok but not as nice as Florence, and there are only a couple of decent restaurants that book up early (7 Devils Brewing was our favorite).
I like all of those suggestions, but technically they’re mostly in the central coast. Reedsport, just north of Coos Bay is the border between the central and south coast.
The cities of the south coast are Bandon, Port Orford, Gold Beach and Brookings.
As for things to do, walking on the beach is always the highlight. I like Cape Blanco and Crissy Field beaches in particular.
The jet boats up the Rogue are fun. You can also ride horses on the dunes from a stable in Pistol River.
Be aware there was a fire near Patrick Creek that closed 199. It has been intermittently closed since due to landslides.
We just did a week in Southern Oregon over the summer. Started in Grants Pass which is a nice little town on the River. Did a two hour jetboat ride from that side. Then left for three days of whitewater rafting down the Rogue. Could have stretched it to four and spent more time exploring the river banks. OARs did a fantastic job. Coordinated a car shuttle so our car was waiting at the take out point which is just an hour from Gold Beach and the coast. We stayed in Brookings, which seems like a pretty quintessential southern Oregon beach town with nice hotels and good seafood restaurants. A bit touristy, but didn’t seem over the top to us.
I wish I had known about the rides on the dunes at Pistol River. Probably would have made time for that!
We did a three day rafting trip on the Rogue with Indigo Creek (before they became OARS) several years ago and it was one of the best vacations ever for our family. Highly recommend!
