A 3 credit summer course for the most part meets 5 days per week for 1.25 hours a day. Two per six week session should keep your student very busy. The max a student can take without special permission is 9 credits per session.

Got it, thanks sunnyflorida and cybermom! (On the course load) I'm thinking he'll be busy...hopefully not overloaded. Wildwood was cold in my son's dorm (maybe it was just the area?); I didn't find the auditorium or our breakout session rooms cold although in one of the rooms I would have been more comfortable with a light jacket.

Along with health history, immunizations, and health insurance, we are required to complete a "My Student Body" form. Must we complete the "My Student Body" form prior to Orientation/registering for classes?

Thanks for the replies regarding room temps. We are heading up today with all the right things...comforter for dorm and light jacket for mom (I'm always cold).

No, you don't have to have the MyStudentBody done before you go. You can register without it...but it's a good idea to get it done. I think it's due by October.

When my son started, you had to finish the MyStudentBody online before you were allowed to register for Spring classes. It is probably a good idea to get it out of the way and save proof of completion before you get busy with your Fall courses.

Ok thanks. I went ahead and did it anyway, though.

Just got home late last night. Get ready for an action packed busy day one. I am high energy kind of person and i can tell you - the day will be fun, informative and long! The sessions overall are excellent. we only left one to go to bookstore shopping that was the fininacial aid session. we completed required fafsa months ago, and are from oos so bright future doesn't apply to us.

What impressed me most? The extensive program planning. The staff and speakers were able to convey sincere care and make FSU a large school seem like a small caring community. the student leaders were bright, happy, and dedicated to the task at hand. there is one session eve of day one where they perform student skits. i would have thought each of them was a drama major. the skits dealt with typical some serious issues students will go thru. I think skits were an excellent format and way to present the info.I filled out the survey as requested but I will take the time today to also write a few emails to provide them with feedback.

my son as an oos new yorker knew no one there. many students attending did have someone even roommate with them that they knew. he said that he knew he had to be the one to introduce himself. he did said it wasn't always easy but he did it and received friendly response from everyone. so some advie for students going solo as hard as it may be -- try to smile and introduce yourself to as many people as you can. You do also travel with a group making it easier to break in.roomates are not put in the same orientation groups. he had a nice mellow roommate said they talked abit at night. i asked him what he liked and disliked he said meeting people was on top and getting up early was on bottom. also we had an early flight on day one and he had not gotten much sleeep night before. belive me try to be well rested when you arrive since between the info brain load and late night early rise you will be tired. (of course he didnt listen to me but i pass this advice along if you follow it you will be happy you did :0)

tour on morning of day two. many parents asked tourguides if the tour was the same as when they visited. well it is a shorter version. a few opted not to go. my h and i went and we met a nice couple and chatted with them. i also spoke with one of the two tour guides who had been in a Q and A panel the day before, I followed up and had her clarify some info. so in addition to a nice walk it allows you to chat even if you already know the general tour script. we also sat down a t a table during lunch and met some folks over lunch on day one.

Before i go i will say that as a CC board member you will know more than most. It is amazing what a resource this BOard is. The advice and posts I Have read over the past year from the veterans (P2N, Cybermom, coachmom ) made me better prepared, more comfortable and even able to help some others....so go noles and go CC!

oh my goshhhh i'm so excited!! ahhh. one week! :D

here is a link to the web site for the speaker (curtis zimmerman) that we had at our son's orientation at the end of day 1. he was terrific!

Curtis Zimmerman

Wow! He is a very dynamic speaker. Sounds like both you and your son were able to take away some positive motivation from orientation.

so are the speakers different at each orientation?
If so, is there a calendar of something of who will be on?

All I know is that Curtis Zimmerman is listed in the "program" that all students and parents receive. But some of the time, Joe Martin speaks.

Leaving for Tally tomorrow for May 28-29 orientation.

Thanks so much to all of you who have given feedback from the earlier sessions. We have reaped a substantial benefit from your posts!

Our d will be majoring in English Lit and is hoping to be able to grab one of the few seats left in some of the honors courses. Unfortunately, some of the honors classes/seminars are completely full. But hopefully, some will open back up.

We will post our findings from FSU upon our return.

i can't wait until tomorrow!! i wasn't able to get a current transcript in time...do you think it's ok that i'm going without one? i could probably print up my grades from k12planet (an online grade website). would that be ok?

anyway, see you guys there! :]

Yes, they will accept for the purposes of class signup an unofficial transcript

not that anyone really cares, but the Japanese class i want to get in now has 1 more available seat, up from 2 lol.

haha nice. The JPN1121 (Elementary 2) class has 11 seats, so I'm going to sign up for that one. I'm going to orientation tomorrow, so I'll definitely get all of the classes that I want.

I see that the statistics class (STA2023) has a pre-req for MAC1105. I haven't taken this class, but I took Calculus BC senior year. Am I exempt from having to take the College Algebra class? Is there a placement test or something I can do if I'm not exempt? My ACT scores don't give me the credit unfortunately.

Composite: 30
English: 32
Science: 29
Reading: 29
Math: 28

I am not sure how strict the prerequisites are but if necessary you could take the College Algebra CLEP and get a 50 or more to gain credit for MAC1105.

CLEP tests are available at most community colleges and universities around the state at a cost of around $75 per test. At FSU CLEP tests are administered through the Center for Assessment and Testing.

You're exempt from MAC1105. Although you won't receive credit for it, an ACT score of 26 or above will let you be exempt.

"At orientation I was told that I was placed in MAC 1105 because of my scores. Can't I get out of it?

To place out of MAC 1105, you need at least a 600 SAT or a 26 on the ACT. These scores let you take the class if you want the credit, or go directly into MAC 1140. To get credit for MAC 1105, your scores must be 680+ or 30+ respectively. If your scores aren't high enough you should consider taking the Advanced Math Placement test. A high score on the AMP will give you credit also."

Since you took Calculus BC senior year you would already be exempt as long as your scores turn out to be 2 or higher.

"Students waiting for AP Calculus test results should consider taking the Precalculus CLEP test as a back-up in the event they earn a score of 2 on their AP Calculus, since an AP Calculus score of 2 would place them in...College Algebra! Any student with an SAT Quantitative score of 600 or higher or an ACT Math score of 26 or higher will be allowed to skip College Algebra and enter the next highest level of math."

I went ahead and took the College Algebra clep test even though I was exempt so I could rack up some math credits.
