I know that the USC website says that a number of seats are reserved for each subsequent orientation session. "At each session, a certain number of seats within popular classes are allotted so each student has an opportunity to register for his/her core classes."

However, is this true for each class time specifically or for each class in general? For example, are seats for a hypothetical 10AM Calculus 1 class opened each session or are seats opened for the general Calculus 1 course (any time) opened each session? It seems like the latter option would force orientation kids in the 3rd and 4th sessions into poor time slots.

If anybody has experience that could answer my question I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks! FIGHT ON!!

And if the question is convoluted, I would be happy to clarify :) Thanks!

Since difference time slots usually have different professors, I would think that seats open in both those slots. If I remember correctly, my D did have a choice of profs and times for a same class at orientation last year.
Remember though that sophs and upperclassmen have already registered for fall classes, so a particular popular class may open up less seats than another.

So you think it is okay to attend late sessions? I can only make the 4th session and I’m just freakin out that I won’t get all my classes at good timings because I have to take the sciences and the thematic option courses my freshman year as well!

The Calculus 1 classes are empty right now, I doubt they’d open up more spots. Same with general sciences, they are in large classrooms and really aren’t in danger of filling up.

Take a look: http://web-app.usc.edu/soc/term_20093.html

im a little concerned about bisc 120 Lg and chem 105 aLg… i know that there are a lot of spots open but since im probably going to the 4th session, and i really like the morning classes the most (i guess im a morning person) im freaking out! so do you think they’ll release those gradually? or do you think i probably wont get into them if i go for the 4th session? thanks! im suffering from freshman paranoia i suppose lol.

The class themselves won’t fill up by the 4th session, I promise. Even under the worst circumstances, I can guarantee spots will open during add/drop.

The good lab times tend to go first though and what you see there is what you get, they don’t open spots in science classes cause there’s simply no need to. You said you’re a morning person and 8am labs are the last to go.

Thanks so much! This really helped!

Chem 105a and Bisc 120 are the most popular classes for first year science majors, so there will be plenty of spaces in them. A very popular schedule (that I was able to do with no problems my freshman year) is…

Bisc 120
Chem 105a
CORE 102 (TO Course)
Core 111 (Attached writing course)
Freshman Seminar

That will be very possible on your registration day. Don’t worry too much about it.

tinytrojan, you’ll be fine. The internationals for example have the very last orientation right before classes start and they will be fine too. My D knows of three last year who had no problem getting into the science classes mentioned above.
Early morning classes are generally the least wanted so you’ll be fine there too.

As for TO, they open up spots every orientation, and since you are accepted you will definitely get your classes. It’s just a matter really at the time of your particular orientation to get into your first choice TO class before spots fill up.
You will take TO Core102 and within that there are several options based on reading material and theme. You will be given that list beforehand with a description of each from which to make your choice. The Core111 Writing will correspond with the Core102 that you take.
