DS got an email today with instructions on setting up his BuzzPort account. I guess Oscar is the Application Status site and BuzzPort is the Admission Status site.

Current Application Status: File Complete; Under Review

on the oscar site… should it say file complete, under review?.. mine says applications received;no decision made… should I call them to follow up?

Oscar = Official Records. You use it for application information as an applicant. Once enrolled, you use it for class registration, to view transcripts, to change your official address, to book housing, to buy a meal plan, to pay tuition, check grades, check your graduation status, etc. As an alumni, you use it to get transcripts and degree verification. Basically, anything official.

Buzzport = Everything Else. It is basically a social-networking type of site to allow organizations and students to interact. Organizations can create tabs to interact with members, admissions can make posts to applicants, etc. Basically, it’s a location to post a bunch of unofficial things, like a fraternity can send an announcement to all members about the next party, or the Admissions office posting announcements.

No official records are kept on Buzzport, just announcement and discussions. When Buzzport shows you an official record (e.g. admissions status, grades, tuition, etc), it’s actually just reading that information from Oscar. So any official records on Buzzport (grades, admission status, tuition owed, etc) is also on Oscar.

You’ll also see Passport. That’s the system that controls IT information (passwords, email addresses, phone numbers, etc.)

G.P.Burdell: I don’t agree with that. Maybe things have changed with BuzzPort. I see more details on BuzzPort than I ever saw on Oscar. In fact, the email says that the admission decision will be posted on BuzzPort on 3/15, note:

Dear _______,

Thank you again for your application to Georgia Tech. Please review the important reminders below:
If you have not yet set up your GT account, please visit our Web site to create your log-in information and view the status of your application materials.
Currently your file is being reviewed by our admission committee. **We will post your admission decision on BuzzPort https://buzzport.gatech.edu/cp/home/displaylogin the afternoon of March 15. **

AkshayM: Oscar says Application Status: Application Complete for DS.

It’s probably nothing, but it’s worth an email.

There’s a link for message explanations that says the following:

Incomplete; Info Requested

At this point, we are missing necessary information and are unable to make an admission decision. Please review the checklist at the bottom of the status check page in Buzzport for more information on missing documentation, etc. If you need assistance, please contact your designated counselor.

Again, it’s probably nothing. I couldn’t find a “status check page” on BuzzPort.

My post wasn’t an opinion, it’s fact. Georgia Tech’s ERP system is Banner 8 which has OSCAR as it’s human interface. Any information going to Buzzport passes Banner -> Oscar -> Buzzport. If the two disagree, Oscar is correct and the issue is probably that Buzzport hasn’t sync’d with Oscar since something changed.

can i repaste my question please if anyone could answer
on the oscar site… should it say file complete, under review?.. mine says applications received;no decision made… should I call them to follow up?

Oscar should have more info than Buzzport. Buzzport can only display what is in Oscar, but does not have to display everything in Oscar.

If you see something in Buzzport that you don’t see in Oscar, that means that either it’s in Oscar and you haven’t found it (most likely), or that someone has blocked your access to the feature in Oscar but forgot to block it’s output to Buzzport (this sometimes happens with grades - students lose access to their transcript for 48 hours while grades are being uploaded, but sometimes the transcripts will still download to Buzzport if the Registrar forgets to block that output and you can see your grades early).

AkshayM: I think “file complete, under review” is the same thing as “application received;no decision made”.
For DS, Oscar says “Application Complete” and BuzzPort says “File Complete; Under Review”. Same thing.

G.P.Burdell: I think the issue is that Oscar shows very limited information to applicants while BuzzPort has much more detail and better explanations for the info it shows.
We can see actual test scores rather than just test dates. The status of Financial Aid forms is not shown on the Oscar page, but is shown on BuzzPort (Student Services & Financial Aid tab).
Maybe Oscar opens up after an applicant is admitted, but for applicants it’s only half a page and the only links lead back to the main school site for Admissions & FA. There’s nothing more to “find” on Oscar.

AVHS Dad, Oscar is the page for data/information on the student. When you’re a student there, that’s where you go to view your credits/transcripts, fees due, etc… Buzzport is more like a congregation of all the services on campus. There are links to Oscar (and some of the data from Oscar are on Buzzport), T-Square (pages for classes and a work submission system), campus updates, etc…

I understand how it’s supposed to work, but pre-admitted the info on Oscar is spartan. There is more application information shown on BuzzPort. Further, the admissions office email specifically points us to BuzzPort for our admission decision.

I don’t think anyone is trying to argue - just trying to explain.

Apparently there’s a special module in Oscar for applicants that has nearly all of the information blocked out. But rest assured that even if you can’t see it, all of that information is in there and that’s where Buzzport get it’s info.

The reason they’re sending you to Buzzport is that they can add comments that do not become part of your official school record (you know, documents they have to keep, categorize, and maintain for eternity and produce if sued or hit with a FOIA request).
