What if your parents are divorced and the non-custodial parent refuses to give ANY financial information, forms, etc?

Remember that the FAFSA only has to be filled out by your non-custodial parent.

If your parents are divorced and your NCP refuses to give any information, you could be stuck between a rock and a hard place as far as receiving financial aid from schools that require financial information from both your parents.

You should sit down and explain to your noncustodial parent that his/her information will be kep confidential by the school and will not be shared with the custodial parent or you if that is not what he/she wants. Show him/her the information in the school's website, give him/her the contact information for the FA office at the schools that you are applying to so that s/he can hear for themselves that their financial information willbe kept confidential.

good luck and happy new year.

We sure do see this come up so much it makes me sad.

That's all, I just wanted to say that.

I think the poster meant to say FAFSA only has to be filled out by the custodial parent.

Thanks for the correction. SCM is correct; the FAFSA only has to be filled out by your custodial parent

Thank you all so much for answering my question.

However... on the FAFSA it asks for the students' parents adjusted gross. Then, it asks for the father's, and there's a third box for the mother's. Do I leave one of them blank?

if your parents are divorced, you only list your custodial parentincome along with any alimony/ child support that is received from the NCP
