I'm a rising senior.. and man am I nervous for senior year! I am taking 6 ap classes and planning to go on 5 official visits in the fall... which means I am missing 2 days of class for pretty much 5 weeks in a row. I am expecting a really hectic first 3 months of the semester. I don't even know how im going to deal with the make up work and application stuff.. :O

Are you taking all 6 AP’s in the first semester? That’s going to be crazy. Are the schools you are visiting all schools that are highly selective (hence all of the AP’s)? Also, not sure what your sport is, but I remember in my daughter’s sport official visits were pretty much reserved for athletes who definitely would have a spot on the team if they wanted it, and depending on the school, you can be pretty assured of your acceptance status based on an “early read” of your transcript. Good luck to you during these exciting (and nervewracking) time!!!

Hi can’twait. My daughter went through this two years ago, so I know something about how stressed you’re feeling. One thing that helped her was to travel on Saturday afternoons and return on Monday night. She’s in a fall sport, so could make her competitions on Friday or Saturday, then get to campuses, even in the east. She could work out with the team and socialize with them on Sunday, then go to some classes on Monday, and still get home that night (we’re in the west, too).

And you shouldn’t feel compelled to take all five trips, if you fall in love with a school and the coach is willing to support your application in the early round (if there is one). There are probably lots of places you would be happy, so try not to second guess and find the “perfect” place.

Hang in there. You’ve worked hard for this, so try and enjoy the rewards!

keylyme, I have 5 aps first semester (bio, physics, calc bc, eng lang, govt) and then ap macroecon second semester. I’m planning on visiting princeton, yale, columbia, dartmouth and penn but may decide to cut the list down. I’m being recruited for swimming, have contacted the coaches, sent in all my info (sat/sat ii/act/transcript/hs profile) and so far I have passed the “first admissions test” for dartmouth and columbia. The other schools’ admissions offices have not gone over my profile yet… but the coaches seem pretty confident about my admission… As far as having a spot on the team, I looked up the ivy league championship results for 2009 and I would be able to score points for about 5 of my events. Thanks so much for the encouragement! :]

riverrunner, I talked to the coaches about visiting in the fall and they told me all the official visit dates. They informed me that I would have to leave mid-thursday and return on sunday. Thanks for the advice, I’m trying to narrow down my choices but it’s so hard to let go to any of these schools–they all seem so amazing and perfect!

I would go. In the Spring when you are studying for your APs, missing these days will not seem as bad as it does right now. You’ll be able to make up the work - but you won’t have another chance to make a good first impression. Just let your teachers know. I’m sure they’ll understand and work with you.

Good luck and have a good time. Remember, the final decision rests with you. Also, your evaluating the school is just as important as selling yourself. It helped with my D2 by asking, “would you want to do here even if you weren’t playing your sport?”

ShesOnHerWay, they don’t offer any official visits in the spring. All visits are planned on weekends sept-oct and many weekends even overlap each other.

Thanks for the tip, I definitely want to keep that in mind because if i do get injured or something, I don’t want to hate where I am.

I meant that missing the days early on (in the Fall) will not have a big negative impact on your studying in the Spring. I’m sorry if I wasn’t clear.

Oh okay, haha I did not see that period the first time I read your post. :D

Wow, congrats on accomplishing soooo much cantwaitfor2010! Very impressive! Some of your schools are ones I’m aiming for as well, and I must ask: When did you send all of those materials? Did coaches ask prior, or did you send materials to them first (and then get into contact with them)? Thanks so much!

What is a “hs profile” …like a resume sorta thing?

mpicz, it is not something you have to worry about or prepare. The high school profile is prepared by your high school and sent with your transcript to colleges. It gives the college an idea of the academic strength, etc of your high school. It includes, among other things, # of APs offered, average SAT/ACT scores, college placements, grade distributions, etc.

Ok cool, just wondering.

cantwait…did you take any ap’s as a junior or all in your senior year?

big dreamer, I sent all my materials right after my junior year transcript came out… some time in july. I have been in contact with many of the coaches since March and they told me beforehand to send my stuff in asap.

mpicz, yeah you can get the hs profile from your counselor or registrars office.

keylyme, I took 4 aps junior year–apush 5, chem 5, statistics 5 and literature 3 :[

Okay, thanks a lot! Clears up a lot for me. It’s okay, 3 5s on AP test are very impressive. I got a 3 on European History thsi last year :(

Congrats Can’t wait…My son went through the same thing last year. He had to fly across the country five times in seven weeks and missed a ton of school but his teachers were very understanding and it was all worth it in the end. Best advice I have: Try to get ALL your essays done ASAP - before school starts. Get the applications (Common app/teachers recs/school profile/GC rec/test scores) in RD as soon as you can to all the schools that have invited you on Official visits and then, if (when!) you get a likely in hand, you can change the RD app of the winning school to ED/EA if the school has it. My S ended up cramming apps at the bitter end of October and that put extra pressure on an already pressured situation.

Enjoy yourself - it is quite a ride!

My son is being recruited by about 4 Ivy league schools for football. He went to a couple of the summer camps/clinics. Your AP numbers are better, but he has taken 6 so far and tested 3s and 4s. Has 4 more this year. One of the Ivy’s that he went to a 1 day clinic at made him an official offer a couple weeks ago. he likes the school a lot and the football program so he went ahead and said yes. he’ll only go out on an official visit to that one school, it’ll be in early December. he’s in the early read process now. Good luck with yours!

Hey all, I’m in a pretty similar position. I’ve got a heavy AP courseload (though not as bad as last year) and am going on 6 visits this fall - 3 official for Dartmouth, Georgetown, and Yale, and hopefully 3 diversity weekends for Amherst, Williams, and Middlebury. If I don’t find my perfect school I may also take offered officials to Cornell and Emory, but right now I’m happy with my final six. It’s gonna be tricky to balance everything, but I think it’s gonna be a ton of fun as well. And like 3xboys suggested, I’m getting all my apps done before school so that’s one less thing to worry about. Good luck to everybody and I’m sure we’ll make it through just fine:)

10scholar, good thinking. You’re gonna have a lot of fun and some tough decisions. Congratulations.

D is in the same boat–she has 5 official visits in a row scheduled. With 6 AP’s, she is worried about missing all those days of school. She thinks she can manage except for AP Stat, since math in not her forte at all, and it’s harder to catch up using someone else’s notes with a subject like that.

Any other advice on how to plan for this whilrwind? My main worry is that her summer schedule is so crammed (lots of in-depth summer assignments on top of work and sports practice), she probably won’t have time to write all, or even any, those college essays in advance. And not all of her schools accept the common app., and most have supplements too!

PS. And to make matters worse, her top 5 list still keeps changing as new opportunities and information come to light! One school just got moved into the top 5 last week after a second unofficial visit. An exciting new offer surfaced this week too. And as school FA pre-reads are coming in, there will be at least one school so far that has to be cut because their FA was abysmal. Yikes!
