OU Campus?

I've never visited the University of Oklahoma, or Oklahoma in general, and i was wondering if anyone has visited and liked/disliked the campus and why?

What were your favorite and least favorite things about the university?

Thanks!

We visited OU last summer with DS and thought the campus was very nice. Some of the highlights for us were the Bizzell Library, [Bizzell Library: Discover Home](http://www.ou.edu/discover/discover_home/virtual_tour/bizzell_library.html), Memorial Union, particularly the many lounge areas, [Oklahoma Memorial Union at the University of Oklahoma - Home](<a href=“Oklahoma Memorial Union”>http://union.ou.edu/), and Campus Corner, which is a shopping & dining area across from campus, [Campus Corner](http://www.oucampuscorner.com/). We liked it better than some of the campuses in our own state of Texas. It is one of DS’s top 4 choices.

Thanks for your reply! if anyone has any other information about the campus and parts you liked that would be great!

also, does anyone have comments about the political science or pre-law programs?

We will be visiting with DD end of November. Have a friend that attended there several years ago an enjoyed the campus. He was an architecture major.

make sure to tell me what you think of the campus after your visit!

I’ve been there twice–on a miserable rainy day and on a nice sunny day.

The campus is always green. Always. They’ve got construction going on, but it’s not obstructive or that noticeable. The architecture building is currently being redone.

The architecture is Cherokee Gothic, which didn’t actually mean that much to me. I think the administration and other similar buildings look like funky castles.

The library was nice, but as a fairly tall girl (5’9" in flats, and I wasn’t in flats) my head touched the ceiling in some parts. It was kind of weird.

The journalism building is GORGEOUS. I want to major in print journalism, but I was shown everything in that building. They’re really proud of it. I don’t really care about sound booths or green stages, but OU has them. And I guess they’re nice?

The landscape is dominated, as one might expect, by the stadium. It’s huge.

The Towers dorms are really nice. The Honors ones were darker but bigger (I’ve heard questionable things about them from current OU students, though).

The food in the cafeteria is all you can eat, and it is really, really good. They have a huge selection–not sure about the variety of vegetarian/vegan foods, but lots of food for carnivores/sweet teeth like me.
I guess, all in all:

Favorite Things:
Everyone was so friendly and welcoming (this may have been because I am NMS, but they were ridiculously nice).
The paper is awesome, and their adviser is very cool.
There are lots of opportunities on campus (movie theater, Starbucks, Wendy’s, etc).

Least Favorite Things:
My feet ached by the end of the day. The campus is ginormous.
You cannot escape the school spirit. I’m not huge on football or anything like that [my second visit was the Wednesday before the UT/OU game. This was a bad decision.], but at my high school, I feel like I can be myself. I didn’t really feel like that there.
I did not see very much diversity. Yeah, there were different races, but everyone really dressed the same.

The pre-law program is really well-regarded; I don’t know anything about poli sci, sorry.
Let me know if you have any more questions. I’ve heard the spiels :)

txkate, you say everyone dressed the same and there wasn’t much diversity. What is different about other universities? I’ve never been to any campus besides OU/OSU, so I’m curious what else is out there. I’d like to be myself, too. I didn’t take notice that it didn’t seem like the best environment to do that, but I didn’t have it in mind while I was there.

I’ve visited…seven? eight? other campuses, and I’ve always found people with hair that’s not a shade you usually find on Target shelves or with shirts from the 70s or indie bands. I know that judging by dress actually isn’t all that indicative of personality, but I take comfort in campuses where not everyone looks like they stepped out of a Hollister catalog. I definitely felt like OU students did. On a campus as massive as OU, I felt like I should have seen more diversity in terms of looks than I did. When I visited American, I saw kids with funky colored hair and at Trinity, the kids were wearing different types of clothes. Of course it’s typical to see lots of people in similar clothes, but I find it refreshing to see people in just jeans and ‘whatever’ t-shirts rather than shirts that all look the same.

Hope that answered your question.

txkate, thanks for your reply! that really helps! i want to have a double major, one being political science and the other is between broadcast journalism and energy management. i cant decide! haha

No prob. Their broadcast facilities are amazing  They are very proud of them. I saw more of them than I really wanted to, haha. They’ve got a great green room, a thing where you can check out equipment, sound booths, editing labs, and some other things (I want to major in print journalism, so I kind of stopped paying attention  ). The lady doing my tour recommended you get a Mac if you major in journalism. If you end up at OU, that’s something to keep in mind.
