OU On-Campus Housing Questions

@3scoutsmom-Thanks for the trip report! I love shrimp so I will have to try the Shrimp Cargot the next time we are in Norman. Stay warm today!

What do you think about the honors dorm?

Thanks @3scoutsmom Having your daughter do the driving was a great idea. How did the music minor discussion and lesson go? Everything go okay with the weather? Must have been pretty hectic with the delay.

An OU student told me that he thought the furniture in the honors dorm was the same as the one in the towers. But according to the virtual tour they don’t look the same. Does honors dorm have the exactly same bed and desk/chair as towers?

The furniture in the honors dorm is not the same as in the towers. Not all rooms in the honors dorm are identical, but the virtual tour is a pretty good representation.

@tikimom-Thank you for clarifying my question.

Can the bed be lofted at honors dorm?

My son has finally decided he will be a Sooner next year. Yea! I am just glad the process is over.

I lived in Cate which I believe has the same furniture as Boren. My bed couldn’t be lofted although I did get bed risers.

No, the honors dorm beds can’t be lofted, and bed risers would be a good idea. There are two very unusual rooms in the honors dorm, however, with permanently built-in lofted beds. If you should happen to get one of those, you’ll lose the under-bed storage but gain some floor space.

Glad your son has decided on OU!

Thanks! whenhen and tikimom!

Trying to figure out the meal plan for my son. I understand a meal is all-you-can eat and does not roll over to the next week. It also can be exchanged for a $7.00 meal at campus restaurants. If my son eats a sandwich, etc for lunch and a full meal for dinner, is 12 meals/week with 150 points a reasonable plan and allowing some flexibility on the dining dollars?

Once the housing application is complete, can students modify the housing and dining preferences?

Again, thanks everyone!

Most meals, other than sushi, are priced below $7.00 so as to take advantage of students with meal exchanges. Therefore the plan sounds pretty solid unless your son is big on breakfast and wants enough points to get something to eat in the morning.

As far as changing preferences is concerned, I know it can be done for dining but I’m not sure about housing. For dining, students have until something like the third or fourth week of classes to change their meal plans if they find the current one isn’t working for them. Perhaps contact OU Housing to see what the deal is for housing? Generally these are the rankings by niceness of the dorms:
a) Headington
b) Towers (Walker, Couch, and Adams in no order)
c) Boren Honors
d) Cate

We opted to have our son get the biggest meal plan for the 1st semester. Better to have him have access to too many meals than to be hungry. He is able to get muffins and similar breakfast items and bring them back to the room. He and roommate got a fridge and a microwave so they can supplement that way too.

The only real complaint we had about the NMS floor on Walker is that it is the 10th floor. Moving in day was an exercise as the elevators are not adequate for so many people moving in at once. There are helpers and considering the scope, it went fairly well, but I was not in the shape I needed to be to take multiple trips up and down the stairs loaded with things.

@Torveaux‌ Woukd you recommend moving in the next day instead? Any idea if the elevators were more available then?

I would just recommend being prepared. They actually have a fairly efficient system. Some elevators go to the lower floors others just to the top few floors. (for move-in, not all of the time) I would not want to take away the excitement factor for the first day. If you have ever been that kid that always got to arrive late, it takes a little of the luster away. That is a great time for the students to get to know their new neighbors and settle in to campus. I’m that guy who will drive out of my way not to sit in traffic, so waiting in line for an elevator would have been smarter, but more frustrating for me. The kids enjoyed the walk to a degree. I think I lost a gallon of perspiration. I did relent by taking the elevator with a large item he had packed, but 2 trips up and down 10 flights of stairs was a lot for me. On the bright side, I took it as a sign to lose some weight…

There are a number of organizations (mostly church youth groups) who volunteer to help people move in. They are all over and some have hand-trucks. If you are not offended by religion in general or by religions other than your own you will have many options.

Two quick questions-any help would be greatly, greatly appreciated!

  1. Which housing at OU is the most social/ would I have the easiest time getting to know lots of people?
  2. I think the Towers are probably the best fit for me, but I haven't filled out the housing application yet. Is it likely that I will be able to get a spot?

Thanks for any feedback!

Cate, the worst dorm, is also the most social. However, now that they’re re-purposing Cate, it will probably be one of the towers. I believe Boren also allows non-honors students to live there. They do a ton of activities although residents have the reputation of frowning on going to parties where there will be drinking (I don’t know what you define as social).

Fill out the Towers application now, and see if you get them.
