To be accurate, the migration to Vanilla, which long-time users still complain about, predates me, and I’ve been here since 2014. So any subsequent updates can’t be blamed on that.<i forget;=“” phpbb?=“” vbulletin?=“”>
What genius thought this up? Absolutely awful. So long CC. I MIGHT come back if you go back to the way it was.
The way the forums behave suggests that the core is still the same, but the skin is obviously greatly changed.
Hmm, I stand corrected. I must be mixing up my updates.
Just for kicks:

Can we get the dates/times to be shown at the TOP of a post instead of the bottom!
Edit to add:
And, why do we need a whole line devoted to how many discussions a poster has - who cares.
Count me as yet another dissatisfied user. This “fresh new look” only makes me want to look elsewhere.
Until now, the best thing about CC has been the user-generated content. But this update dilutes that content over many pages of junk white space. To my eye, the information density is reduced for the worse. That discourages this loyal user from returning. This is why I am late to register my dislike of this update: I simply don’t spend as much time on this site with this new version. I doubt I am alone in this reaction. Please give us the option to return to the classic view.
The featured threads on the USC forum (one of the most active school forums if not the most active) are both from 2014, have very few posts and were never important threads. Makes the entire forum seem lame and out of date since they are the first thing one sees.
@thumper1 omg I agree with you about the lists, I would be horrified to be on them! I don’t think any regular posters want a score kept that is displayed like it’s a competition.
As a side note, the only way I found my way back to this thread was to click my own user name, then my replies to find a previous post here, lol.
Since I can’t find my other communities anymore (or its just too hard to do do so) I’ll just be “on my porch” in the USC forum if anyone is looking for me.
Doschicos, I pretty much always visit CC via my iPhone—95% of the time.
When I go to the “Home” page, there are article-like things to click on, and maybe four or so Forums. No amount of scrolling gets me to any additional Forums—just more article-like titles or snippets. I have tried clicking the lines in the uppermost corner (usually a menu selection), but clicking on Discussion Forums gets me to the same limited choice. I go in circles. This is the only useful to me Forum in those choices.
I keep hoping it will shake out and I can go back to enjoying the site. But thus far, no dice.
This current format is simply unworkable for me. ?
@ucbalumnus by “core” I meant the application itself, not just the data. And as stated I am just guessing anyway and could be completely wrong. I don’t know if Hobson’s/CC has built the app from the ground up or not, or if it belongs to a 3rd party (which is my guess). I see references to “Vanilla Forums” above:
Can you change the font? This new setup is terrible on the eyes. Feel like l am reading with inadequate light or something seems off.
The Layout is weird as well.
@intparent @Postmodern We know what the architecture is, it’s Vanilla forums and have been for a while according to @skieurope . It’s very customizable and has some version control from what I could glean from a two-minute documentation browsing. I doubt Vanilla has changed their database structure significantly. My guess is that CC employs at least one Web developer and/or designer. If not, I’m available for consulting at a reasonable rate
To some of those asking about Reddit - it’s not a good substitute for CC since there’s no way to separate posts by topic. It’s just a long list of threads sorted by parameters such as date posted and popularity. There’s already r/applyingtocollege which has a very different user base and is thriving.
Not anymore. @CADREAMIN
Although this exercise reminded me why I don’t feature threads often; doing so marks as read, and there is no option to mark as unread. Since I rarely frequent fora like USC (simply because I can add little to any conversation there), I really don’t want the new post updates.
You want to know how annoyed I am? This is the only thread I feel like participating in. I found the holy grail of hairbrushes, of all things, from one of my favorite bloggers. I’d love to start a thread, but I don’t want to out of spite. I want to take my toys and go somewhere else.
Another complaint… if it has not already been mentioned… It takes me 3 or 4 steps to get where I want to g on the Cafe. I find a thread of interest. None of the pages are shown on the initial screen, so I must click on the topic. It then shows the first 4 or 5 pages (the very first ones), and the very last or most recent page. So, I need to click on the last page, have it load, and then work backwards to find where I left off, if I’ve been gone for a few days. The pages USED to be shown directly under the topic, and several back pages were indicated instead of several original pages. I could often guess about where I left off, pick one of the more recent (but not last) page, and immediately join back in. Now it takes 3 steps, waiting for each step to load, etc. before I find my place. Far too time-consuming! Gets me irritated each time.
I just sent @CCadmin_Sorin a sccreenshot of a “featured discussion” about Duke from 2016. No clue where this was a featured discussion but its ancient and why featured discussions from random forums are popping up is beyond me (and really stupid!)
@skieurope You’re my hero! Thank you, that really helps. Appreciate it!
does the “participated” checkmark seem broken for other people? On the old forum I used to scan down to see if there were any updates to threads I had posted a reply in.
There is a round checkmark icon that if you hover over it says “participated” but I see it darkened for threads I never posted anything in. For example there is a thread “High Schoolers: Six Steps to Get A Jump on Senior Year” in the College Admissions forum that has no replies, yet on the College Admissions forum when I scroll down the checkbox is darkened. If there are no replies, how could I have participated?
@jym626 I pushed some of the Duke featured threads up higher.
@skieurope - What is the benefit of pushing up a 2.5 year old thread? That’s the kind of thing that makes no sense to us old geezers. I did not open the thread so don’t know when anyone last posted in it, but still… it’s OLD.
