I think the lack of regular posters not posting on a thread or starting a new thread is a combo of not being as savvy on the new format, not being as motivated to post because of the new format, and/or retaliation for the new format.
Just spent a few minutes on reddit and, TBH, it’s kind of six of one and half dozen of the other, compared to the new CC. Pros: the search engine is really simple. Just plug in the word “college” and you are bound to pull up a lot of relevant titles, and - ironically - many more threads per screen than CC is able to do currently. Cons: Same washed out gray on gray coloring; no moderation; hard to take the subjects seriously since the majority seem to be for venting purposes only.
Tooling around reddit also seems to suppot the impression that there is a generational divide on CC. A chances thread is really just a bid for friendship and validation, and when they don’t find what they came looking for, the kids leave or find ways to get kicked off.
The adults approach CC in a much more buttioned-down, custodial, manner. Our philosophy is, “Why spend this much time on a forum, if I am not actually helping someone?” In many ways, the kids are in one lane and we are in another.
The sad thing is, our lane is getting squeezed by ridiculous outside content and the new owners seem more interested in pandering to the other lane. Hate to play the economic advantage card, but, don’t adults spend more money? My old CC page used to be bombarded by ads from big-ticket companies. It got to be kind of a joke after awhile. Doesn’t that count for something?
I reopened the Sinner’s Alley Happy Hour thread.
Uh Oh. I recall my laptop took the brunt of my reading Sinner’s Alley. More than once , I spewed my coffee on poor laptop. There were some hysterically funny posts and posters on there…think I’ll head on over. Thanks, @jym626, for posting the link…I may not have found it otherwise…
@gosmom - @MaineLonghorn has reopened Sinners Alley!! Its back in business!! See you there!! There were some absolutely hysterical posts there. Hard to know if it can be recaptured now.
Good heavens I hope not!!!
@CCadmin_Sorin The re-opened Sinner’s Alley is a perfect example of why the date of a post needs to be at the top rather than the bottom.
Is it no longer possible to unsubscribe to threads or turn off notifications for a particular thread?
I really want to unsubscribe to this thread and stop receiving 100 emails a day about it.
I got used to it pretty fast once I got past the error page when I went to my bookmarks first (I always go there first, it’s the page on CC I’ve, well, bookmarked).
Nice on mobile, though I am usually here on desktop.
Did anyone mention to those complaining about font size and such that these can be set in one’s browser?
Still wish I could bookmark a forum, but oh well, that was 2-3 redesigns ago that we lost that.
One suggestion: In my bookmark list, threads with new posts are in regular font, those withOUT new posts are bold. Seems it ought to be the reverse.
@notrichenough In CC settings you can turn off email notifications. On another note, why did they remove the go to page number of go to beginning/end of a thread. Not down to click a million times to go to the beginning to catch up on certain threads.
@abasket , and another reason to add to your list as to why posts are low is because people think no one will respond to their new posts. People are gone!
I agree, I actually want to make a post about something I want information on but don’t want it to sit there either. Maybe I will try later and see what happens.
I tended to be a “first page” reader. Most of my reading/commenting was based on what was on page one of a forums threads - only going to page 2 or beyond if I was looking for a certain thread.
I’m still reading that way - except it seems that there is a much shorter list of threads to look at once you have all those pinned/suggested threads. I only want to click so much to see content.
Yes, I know I can turn off all email notifications, I only want to turn them off for this thread.
People are creating new posts and they are getting responses.
Why is everything double spaced when I am typing a response?
And then when it posts, it is single spaced? Most forums - when they’ve gone through a re-design - show your post exactly like you’ve typed it in the ‘reply’ box.
Just another weird thing. Was this re-design a class project by failed 6th graders? It really does not make sense.
Tit for tat. Of course people are creating new posts - and getting “some” responses.
Most days at work I have a routine of checking CC while I eat my breakfast and lunch. Been doing this for years. I can easily tell that the last couple of weeks I am only a portion of my lunch in before I’ve exhausted any posts/threads I want to read. In fact I was off CC largely for 5 days over the holiday - and missed very little.
Linguist here! Make sure your made up “voice” sounds real, and not at all like your own.
You couldn’t just turn off one thread before either you can only turn them all off its very annoying but if you see it that changes let me know.
