Maybe it’s all a part of the plan – close this thread so that it isn’t always at the top of the “Latest Posts” thread. Maybe the forum owners don’t like that the shortcomings are so obvious.
PLEASE DO NOT CLOSE THIS THREAD!
I would much prefer everything to be in one place as compared to hunting around for different update threads.
You forgot:
- move the user name, status, number of posts, etc., back to the left under the avatar where they used to be, and get rid of the stuff no one cares about, like "registered user", or how many posts are replies and discussions, and move the date to the top on the same line as the reply number.
This single step will probably ring out 50% of the wasted space, maybe more.
- get rid of the useless gamification aspects like most number of points or whatever. We are adults here and no one cares.
- next time you want to do an upgrade, commit to a beta test.
Agree that if you close this thread, I won’t be coming back at all. I’ve been checking in occasionally for updates, but without this one spot to check (and also the clear message we were just given that there is no fix forward or back out coming soon), it isn’t worth coming to hunt for separate threads for updates any more.
I’m guessing that having millions of new posts to track going forward isn’t likely to be a big problem. And it is all talk to say how much our input is valued. No one “in charge” thought it would be a good idea to have experienced users Beta test or focus group with you. In my opinion, the best thing on the internet has been irretrievably broken because of the move to a poorly designed platform. Somebody got greedy and wanted to cut costs, and they killed the golden goose (the content) in the process. I’m done with CC for good.
Oh, &$@? I can’t even find the logout button on this godforsaken crappy site to log off for the last time. ?
It’s the little gear icon in the upper right (if you are on a computer). Bummed you are leaving though
@CCadmin_Sorin I appreciate the update…i truly do.
This line: " We are a customer of the vendor and we have to wait in line like every other customer to make fixes and updates." It’s hard to believe that CC would have to wait in line given that its a top 5000 site in the U.S. (though that’s dropping, natch > https://www.similarweb.com/website/collegeconfidential.com). The vendor (along with the designers) screwed it up…not the least of which was (apparently) not taking a snapshot of the previous site which meant you can’t roll back.
BTW, if anyone is sure of the vendor name (I had heard Vanilla Forums but that might not be accurate), I’d like to know as I want to make sure I never recommend them to clients in the future.
So sad, I just heard Tina Turners Rolling on the River and without realizing I was doing it I was replacing the word rolling with scrolling as I was singing.
PLEASE DO NOT SHUT DOWN THIS THREAD. Just think of the clicks it gets if for no other reason.
Thanks for finally giving some indication that there might be improvements.
The problem isn’t with the Vanilla Forums software, which is an extremely flexible, highly customizable enterprise-level platform for this sort of thing.
The problem is with design choices that were made, and it’s not clear where those came from, whether from the CC powers that be or developers at Vanilla. It’s hard to believe anyone at Vanilla is doing this in a vacuum, so…
The site has been using Vanilla as a platform for, what five years? Including the version of the site prior to the recent “upgrade”.
If you look at Vanilla’s web site you’ll see screen shots of many different forums and you can see how it can be configured.
I know a little about how stuff like this works, and what’s frustrating is that things like font style and weight and spacing are almost literally one line changes to a .css file somewhere. Things like visibility and location of components such as “registered user” are usually as easy as adding/deleting/dragging stuff around a template. It’s trivial stuff to do.
IMO “We have to wait in line” == we are broke broke and can’t afford to make this happen quickly. It’s fairly inconceivable to me that a forum of this size and volume can’t get stuff done more quickly if they want to, but what do I know. This site even shows in the screen shots on Vanilla’s web site to promote their software, this has to be a major account.
I appreciate the update and also hope this thread stays open as a central bug report/feature request clearinghouse.
And please add my request to, in the topic list within a forum, to have in bold topics that have unread/new posts rather than the ones that are already read (as it is currently). It’s just the opposite of what one would expect from a user experience POV
I think Sorin’s post sounded very nice and I appreciate the update, but I don’t believe there will be any substantial changes coming anytime soon. We’re looking into it and someday, when our vendor gets around to it, we’ll see what changes are possible doesn’t exactly sound like a commitment to change. And closing the one place that’s capturing all the challenges people are having so multiple threads can be opened is inefficient. People have been making other threads but they’ve been closed and the OPs have been directed here.
I tried on two separate days, and I was unable to uncheck a bookmarked thread on mobile (Safari iPhone) – I tap on it and it will not change to not bookmarked.
However, I was able to uncheck a bookmark on the desktop version (Safari iMac).
FYI @CCadmin_Sorin
Thanks @CCadmin_Sorin - but (a) don’t forget to make our username and avatar appear on every page on the ipad and phone versions and DO NOT CLOSE THIS THREAD!!. As I mentioned many pages back, this is a colossally bad idea for many reasons, which I listed back then so do not need to repeat.
If this had been beta tested before release, some of these issues would have been caught before the launch.
I agree…this thread is one place…just one…where this new format and any information about its update can be addressed.
Please don’t close it.
Thank you for a clear and concise post @CCadmin_Sorin . I don’t know if I buy it all but it was helpful to see the bullet pointed list (a good idea for readability).
However by closing this thread and starting separate threads for individual changes (? is that correct) is sort of like contributing to the problem of NOT being an efficient site. NO WAY are people going to keep those threads contained on one little topic. NO WAY are people going to take the time to check each thread of the several issues they personally have with the format. The one plus you may be thinking? LOTS of hopeful clicks to each of those threads to keep post counts up.
You can’t blame us for not feeling trustworthy. Raise your hand is your believability factor in CC is down the last 3 weeks?
OMG, I just discovered something: That, if you click on the search engine at the top of the page - just plug in a word and don’t bother choosing the drop-box menu that lists “entire site”, “forums only” or “advanced search” - you wind up in a universe that looks very similar to the old CC: Less white space, more threads per screen and the familiar logo at the top of the page. I’ve only tried it on my laptop. Could this be one last outpost that the new algorithm never reached? Someone needs to take it, freeze it, and figure out how to dupicate it.
^^^huh!!! got the same result!
BUT if you click on any thread shown, it takes you right back to the newly formatted CC:(
Not on my Android.
