Hi all, my DS is a Texas high school junior and who just got his first SAT results back. He's interested in applying for out of state admission to Iowa as a history major. Can you guys honestly tell me what you think his chances are for admission and any out-of-state scholarships based on his current profile.

GPA: 3.7 weighted / 3.4-3.5 unweighted

Rank: Probably top 25-30%

SAT: 1970 as follows 720 Critical Reading; 580 Math; and 670 Writing (He plans on taking the SAT again in Jan and then ACT for the first time in Feb 2015)

SAT II World History Subject Test: 680 (He will take the US History Subject Test in June 2015)

AP World History: 5/5 (He will also be taking the US History & English AP Exam)

Hook: African-American Male

EC: Track freshmen year; Basketball manager sophomore year; running cross country this year and next

Job: Working at a fast food restaurant 10-12 hours a week since June 2014

Thanks in advance for any advice or input that I receive from you guys

See that admissions is a cut-and-dried matter of having a RAI score of 255 or higher. There is a link on that page that brings you to another page explaining the RAI and how to calculate it. Go through this exercise and see what you find out.

As mentioned earlier admissions are pretty cut and dry once you calculate your rai score. With your stats he should be an admit with the 8k a year Iowa advantage scholarship. Check the scholarship page to see If he qualifies for more.

Thanks all for your replies. My son is focusing on finishing strong this semester. He retook the SAT in January and improved his overall score to 2070 in that setting (790 verbal; 590 math; 690 writing). He will be taking the ACT test for the first time this April and is shooting for a 32 composite score to try to make up for his relatively low GPA/class rank.
I’ve run the admissions calculator and it looks like he is a lock to get in so it really come down to whether he will get any merit aid.
Iowa actually uses the higher of the weighted/unweighted gpa, so they will calculate everything using the 3.7. Also Iowa does a pretty good job at giving aid, especially to those with need
Yes @fatherof2boys, they use the higher GPA for everything. Once you come to the university they don’t even list the two, just the higher one as your high school cumulative GPA
