Out of State - Car Insurance

Hi, I’m going through an issue currently.

I go to school out of state and my mom who lives in California wants to give me her current car but the title is being held by her the bank/lienholder. Her name is on the title so I can not insure the car under my own policy and her insurance is saying that they cannot insure the car if it is going to be out of state for most of the year.

How should I go about this? Should she transfer ownership of the vehicle to me by refinancing the car loan or is there a better way to go about this?

She should maintain at least partial ownshership (or all if that’s easier) and ask insurance about insuring it for her college student’s daughter’s car. For a college out of state. Although we’ve not gone through this, my friends have and they had no issue manintaining the insurance for OOS student. Worst case maybe your mom could just change insurance companies. Try Progressive or Geico.
