Out of State Looking for off campus Housing

Hello!

does anyone know of any quality areas for a 1 bedroom 1 bath apartment/townhome in the area? I am from Texas and am visiting in a weekish and I wanted to find some places to tour. I just don’t know what are good areas to live in and what are bad areas to live in.

Thank you!

The Rensselaer website has an extensive section on living off-campus in “Residential Life”. And, they might have a housing office that would have some pointers on this, too.

Freshman and sophomores have to live on campus at RPI - not sure, but the only possible exception would be someone who is married.

So unless you are a transfer student, the issue is moot.

I am a transfer student pursuing a second bachelors degree at the ripe age of 25 haha. I am hoping I will meet the exception and not have to be forced into living with someone 3-5 years younger than me.

Does anyone know if there are any “bad” areas I should avoid in Troy?

There are crime maps of Troy, such as: http://www.neighborhoodscout.com/ny/troy/crime/

There was a 24 year old senior and a 26 year old junior on my floor freshman year, at another top college. There was NO issue. The only issue is if you are married or in a long-term relationship. The 24 year old was a stoner and possibly a dealer, and kept to himself.

Would there be a strong reason to not live on campus, other than your view of your age (which I don’t think will be an issue for anyone else)? RPI has so many clubs and other programs that would be much easier to access when living on-campus.

Let alone the weather issue of traveling to classes in the snow.

Although, if you think you want to stay year-round, you might want to try to get a regular lease because I believe it can be a hassle to stay on-campus in the summer and over breaks.

Are you moving from your parents’ house or your own apartment? If you’ve never apartment hunted before, you should consider going with a dorm for the first semester and looking around while you are there.

I used to live on the east side of Troy, which is pretty safe. It is the Pawling Ave/Pinewood Ave area. I would say avoid South Troy if you can.

I suggest staying closer than Hoosick St. In that direction. The area by Tibbitts is pretty safe. Off campus rentals are generally much cheaper than on campus housing, and you can save lots of money if you cook or eat cheaply instead of going with the meal plan.

Thank you for all the suggestions! I ended up finding a nice apartment complex just beyond Hoosick a mile from campus. I ended up being pretty partial to staying “on the hill”. Showed up for the Flag Day Parade in down town troy and man I have never seen so many tatted up smoking moms and dads with little 3 and 4 year olds running around in one place! I have seen my fair share of red neck gatherings/4th of July’s here in Texas but nothing compared to flag Day! It was a much nicer city than I was expecting with a lot of good local pubs and some quality living. Life just seemed like it would be way more comfortable on the hill.
