Am confused as to the actual cost of attending Mizzou for an out of state student.

As there are many OOS parents out there, if you don't mind, could you please share how much it costs per year, or semester, if you prefer, for your out of state child to attend Mizzou.

It seems that son would possibly only qualify for the Mark Twain scholarship and/or the National Merit scholarship, so we're getting out our calculators to see if a visit would be worth our while. We had decided to wait on visiting far away schools until the acceptances and offers came through before making a final decision.

Son will be an engineering major, and does not qualify for any additional scholarships through the engineering department.

The answer is, “It varies.” The website gives a good estimate of the cost of attendance. You would have to factor in the cost of transportation from your home state. The school charges tuition by the credit hour and adds a nonresident fee per credit hour, so the cost changes from semester to semester. You could do your own calculation (based on, say, 15 or 16 credit hours). See the Cashier’s Office page on the website for the credit hour cost and nonresident surcharge.

In addition, there are several meal plan options (see Campus Dining), and dorms cost different amounts (see the Residential Life website). If he moves off campus at any point after freshman year, housing costs will go down. If he joins a fraternity, that’s another expense. Unfortunately, it’s not as easy to come up with an exact cost as it is in a liberal arts college, where tuition and room and board are flat fees, the same for everyone. My son has in-state through the Mizzou Heritage Scholarship (OOS child of alum), so I’m not much help.

Just to give me a ballpark, what is your sticker price with the instate tuition? Let’s assume say 16 hours at instate tuition. Just tuition, fees associated with attending, like activity, lab. Not housing, meal plan. That will be the same whether instate or out of state. And no fraternity fees, for sure.

For 15 hours ( 3 will be added later) for Spring Semester:
Tuition: $3684
Health Fee $93
Recreation Fee: $133
Student Activity: $158
Information Technology: $190 ( depends on classes)
Social Fee: $15

It’s pretty easy to figure out what it’s going to cost you. Just use 14-16 credits (unfortunately you won’t know until they pick classes- so just pick a number in that range) and add both instate and OOS. Then add all the fee’s listed on the cashier’s office page. Then decide what kind of dorm your child would want and how many meals they want to purchase. This will give you an almost accurate cost before any scholarships.

Thank you for the guidance. I saw the cashier’s office page, with all the fees listed by hour, but thought there might be another area on the site with a more straightforward method. I’ll just get out my calculator and start adding up. Thanks again.

I’ve heard ballpark Mizzou (tuition, fees, room, board, meal plan, etc etc) is about $21,000 out of state for the entire year. That’s a quote from my parents though, and they tend to overestimate/round up.

No, Kristin. It can not be $21,000 for out of state students. For tuition, fees, room, board, meal plan, etc it will be be about 30K-32K a year.

If son gets an OOS tuition waiver, for a year, what would the price be? I’m going to top it off at 18 credits a semester, with engineering and lab fees, room and board, going with the cheapest meal plan, but lots of dining dollars. I’m assuming with an OOS waiver, it would be less than 30K a year. There are a lot of kids from California who post here. Do any of y’all have any kind of scholarship that gives you a cheaper cost than 30K and what is it?

^^ You’ll need to go on the Cashiers Office website, find the appropriate charges, and do the math according to your own hypothetical situation. If you have an OOS tuition waiver, you don’t pay the nonresident fee, and the cost is the same as in-state tuition.

Does Mizzou offer OOS waivers w/ the Mark Twian scholarship?

D is accepted and we are waiting to hear if she received a MT Scholarship (she meets the min requirements) but with out an OOS waiver - it may not matter.

Like someone else we are waiting to see how the financials play out before visiting campus - hopefully in late Feb / early March.

Does anyone know when the scholarship notifications will go out / have they already?

my acceptance letter came December 17 and my mark twain notification came December 21. so i’m not sure proximity to the holidays is the reason. this is not to say its not still coming… I just wanted to let you know for reference hope it comes soon!
