Outdoors at bard?

I love Bard, and I know there’s an outing club, but is it actually active? Do people go skiing, swimming in the river, hiking, etc at all or do they mostly just stick around campus?

I don’t know much about the Outdoors Club (I think it’s called that… I could be wrong, sorry), but a LOT of people go hiking in the Catskills. People swim in the river, but it’s not the greatest (the Hudson used to be a superfund site, also having grown up on the Hudson with a beach near my house, it’s not the best for swimming). There’s a waterfall here that people swim in all the time though. Skiing is less prominent because we’re not in the snow belt of New York, however there are some places near here (like Stowe).

The activeness of Bard depends on you, really. Some kids never really go off campus and some do outdoorsy things all the time.

There are some great hiking trails right by campus and the waterfall is a great spot. I don’t know if I would recommend swimming in the Hudson. There’s supposed to be a place where you can borrow/rent canoes that’s either associated with the campus or is just situated nearby.

Skiers can easily get to Hunter Mountain (across the river) or to some of the places in Western Massachusetts, but I’m not sure if the ski club runs a shuttle or anything.

Awesome! Makes me feel better about the school’s outdoorsiness. Thanks for your replies

I absolutely love how beautiful the Bard campus is and go hiking with friends quite frequently. As far as the outdoors club goes I’ve never seen an event posted for it on the online calendar or on a flyer so I’m guessing it’s not that active but I haven’t sought it out. You’d most likely want to find friends who like doing outdoorsy things, rent a zipcar, and arrange outings.
