Outside recommendations?

I heard a few people on CC say that it wasn't wise to get outside recommendations because it makes you look desperate. I have a job in local government and a prominent politician can write me a recommendation (since he was also my boss, it's not just a recommendation because I know him, but he has insights into my work ethic and the like). Should I get the recommendation, or does it do more harm than good by making me look desperate?

I’m not sure I understand why looking “desperate” is a problem if you are a qualified applicant. You’re filling out a college application, not asking someone on a date. o.O

I’ve heard of a different take on this. Outside recs can often come across as arrogant, especially if the politician talks about his “prominence” more than your actual work. While this politician was your boss, he might have a limited window through which to view you as a person, thus his letter may come across as decent but the act of including it just because he is notable (though not your intention) may come across as arrogant.

Condensed version: The choice is yours, but I would stick to the teacher recs. Save the outside rec for a possible waitlist situation, etc.

^^Now that I could understand.
