Outside scholarships/deferring

We find ourselves in a fortunate situation where son has accumulated a nice collection of outside merit scholarships for next year (about$10K, one of them a potentially renewable $5K per year, with a couple more that we're waiting on). His school allows $5000 per year in outside scholarships to "count" as his summer job and school year earnings contribution (he will be a D1 athlete at a Pac-12 school and will be sent off to play his sport in the summers, etc so will not be able to work at all. Also, he is choosing to receive need-based aid in lieu of athletic money because the school has really good financial aid and the $$ was greater than the athletic scholarship he was offered.) The FA office has told us that we need to ask the sponsors of the scholarships if they will defer the funds (above the limit) to the following year. Does anyone here have any experience with how this is received by sponsors? What about the National Merit Corp? Is the one-time $2500 deferrable?

Thank you in advance for your help.

Hi. You cannot defer national merit scholarship. Whether you can defer other outside scholarship is on a case by case basis. Some will defer.
