Outside scholarships- has anyone thought about them?

I am a bit surprised that though there are so many internationals here for whom finance is a major issue, litle mention is made of scholarships from outside sources. Of course it's true that outside scholarships are comparatively quite small and will not cover anything close to the yearly tuition, they can really help to cover up the difference between the college's financial aid package and the total costs.

For those who are interested, check out www.fastweb.com.

It is worth trying for these scholarships- it doesn't cost anything (usually all you have to do is fill out an online form and submit an essay on a selected topic) and the scholarships, while individually small in size, can add up. I am planning to try for a few of them once I am done with sending all my applications.

Hey,do these things really exist/work??
coz I hav been to that site...and many innumerable sites.....for this.......
but never thought they really work......

I was going to write some scholarship essays too after submitting all my apps. But for right now my apps have priority.
Usually one cannot use outside scholarships to to cover the difference between the college's financial aid package and the total cost, at least if you are on need-based aid. Most colleges have an outside scholarship policy stating that any outside scholarships will decrease partly need-based loans and partly college grants, so the total amount of your financial aid package would remain the same, only its components would change.
