High Academic D3 non NESCAC/IVY Recruit coach met with son and I for dinner . He offered slot said son is in the band requirements . He also offered to pay for airfare for OV in January . Discussed the needs for Merit / Grant non need $$$ , told them this was the key .
Can anyone give some guidance on this , why offer slot and fully paid OV if $$ would not be offered.

So you’re wondering, what’s the point of offering the slot and OV if there is no (merit)scholarship money? (by the way, it’s pretty rare for a D3 to pay for the recruit’s OV airfare)

Just a few thoughts -

At a top D3 school, the value the coach can provide is admissions support. If the school offers merit aid, the best he can do is point you in the right direction to apply for it,

The incentive for a college to provide merit aid is to attract the strongest students academically. If you are in the top quartile of the applicant pool, you have a very good chance of qualifying for significant merit aid.

But, if you are in the top quartile academically, you probably don’t need the coach’s slot.

Yes rare indeed for the airfare , but true . I advised would need significant merit aid support . S is not in top quartile so the slot is needed. They contacted today as well and said will be advising on the flight info , on can only assusme there is $$ as well , as I did make it clear its the only way to make it work.

Remember, the coach’s recruiting budget and the financial aid office are not the same thing, and I doubt there is any interaction between the two offices at all.

When I say no interaction, I mean that financial aid does not have any say in how the coach spends the athletic recruiting budget, so the fact that your son is being flown out for a visit doesn’t necessarily mean anything good (or bad) about merit aid.
