Overall environment?

I know that American is an incredible school with great programs and opportunities. I spent a month at a leadership program there last summer and loved the campus. But does anyone know what the overall environment is like? I heard it doesn’t have a unified college atmosphere with little to no spirit. Is this true? Basically I was wondering if the students are completely enthralled with acedemics or if there is a fun atmosphere as well?

thanks!!

Well, if you live on-campus there is alot more unified atmosphere. There really is not much school spirit, but AU does not really have a big sports program, so it can be understandable. Regarding the atmosphere, most juniors and seniors move off campus and into the world of DC. Once you are 21 living in DC, why would you go back? DC is sooo much fun that there's no reason to.

just a parent's comment, but all my info comes from a present student....like the other DC schools, and other "city" schools for that matter, the fun of its campus is focused on DC. DC IS the unifying factor! ( as for example, NYC is to NYU) absolutely NOT solely focused on academics! it's finals there now, so don't know how many students will write you back, but there's tons of stuff to do, whether it's parties or museums or whatever. also, the school spirit thing, is probably related to the fact that it's not a big football-kind of school. but "spirit" comes in all kinds of packages! good luck!

SoCoGirl, what program did you to at AU over the summer? I spent three weeks at Tenley campus with LeadAmerica...

I went for the Law and Advocacy program with the National Student Leadership Conference
