I did OK in high school, in part was because I was partying... I spent 2.5 years after HS working/partying then got into rehab and now I'm in college doing great (4.0 GPA) and I've been sober for a year an a half, roughly.

Do you guys think this would make a good essay topic?

Could it be a double-edged sword? Some people don't have a good image of "addicts" even though if they don't use drugs/alcohol anymore... so I really don't know if I could use this.

It depends for what. Most people talk about their addictions if it effected their school work, and the work it effected is what is being evaluated. Since it did not effect your college grades, which is what I assume they are going to look at if you are transferring, then I would not write about it. In general, people like reading more upbeat stories. I am sure you can turn it around by saying how you overcame it, but I think there are other things you can write about. You want to write an essay that highlights your personality, and usually when people are in some sort of addiction they are not them selves. But then again any topic can be great, if it is written correctly. This essay could give you more depth, if you feel like someone might read your transcript and think nerd.

To talk about how substance abuse affected your high school grades would be to talk about something that occurred 4-5-6 years ago. Do you have anything more current that you can write about?

Your college transcript shows that you can succeed in college. Therefore, imo you do not need to explain, or draw attention to, your high school transcript.
