Overcoming Adversity

I recently attended a workshop that helps both transfer and freshman applicants to, perfect their personal statement. I spoke with one of the admissions officer and she stated that " It would be our loss if we did not admit you to CAL". But here's the problem my stats are WAY below their avg( 3.86UCgpa,1780SAT, 670us history/ 560 math IIc). Could it be that my personal statements might be the determining factor..?
Essay #1 Talked about how APUS..and learning african-american history...giving me a new found respect for my culture.
Essay#2 I'm talking about starting a Clarinet Quartet(as an african-american male), and starting my association, NIYA(Nigerian Ibo Youth Association)
Essay #3 I talk about how i cared for my brother after his serious car accident, and since i lieve in a single parent home(mom is a flight attendant), i had to care for my brother quite a bit.

So what do u guys think..are the essays going to help me that much?

1780 is low for CAL?
but 560 is low :(, however, i think that you will get in, if the adcom says that to you are good, that means you got good chance. Work harder

thanks Newbyreborn. Actually all of my stats are way below CAL's average...ah oh well i guess it doesnt hurt to apply!!..anymore comments

I don't think 1780 is that bad, is it?

That would be 600, 600, 580.

Does anybody now if Cal would frown upon these scores if you didn't have a good reason why they are not that great.

I am actually look at the catolog from 04 admissions and I see this

Top 50% Admit

SAT Verb Score 590-710
SAT Math Score 630-740

Is this representative or what they printed wrong?

Make sure that you have tons of Comm. Serv, alot EC's and decent awards.

I am not sure if it will make for your academic stats but I think it's worth a try.

Thanks daniel...what do u guys think about the rest of the UC's...LA/D/SD/SB/I

caliplaya03:

UCB/UCLA: Reach
UCSD: Slight Reach
UCI/UCSB/UCD: Match

yup i think i have to agree with your analysis..hopefully i can dish out a good essay!
