Overdone songs? How important?

@BeccaW444 - Here are some of the “Do’s and Don’ts” for college auditions from CCM’s website:

You can find more at: http://ccm.uc.edu/theatre/musical_theatre/auditions1/dos_and_donts.html.

Florida State also has a fairly comprehensive set of recommendations:

Just a reminder from CC about posting rules…links to BLOGS are not permitted. As well, links to sites that promote services, including those of private coaches, teachers, etc., are not allowed, based on the Terms of Service. Even if links have helpful resources and information, this rule is one that members need to abide by. Thank you!

@Collegemom – In the past links to college websites have been allowed, has this changed?

Just want to make sure to follow the TOS. Thanks!!

RE: TOS, I found this:
“We recognize that occasionally a post may contain a URL which could be of value to our visitors.”

That, to me, says that non-promotional links that are of value are permitted? Is that right, @Collegemom? I would certainly say that those links posted would fit that bill.

My two cents on the actual OP’s question greatly echos what has already been said, but I want to reiterate that overdone songs are dangerous. I think @EmsDad was right on that one school might stop you outright in singing something that another school recommends for you. I encourage my students to NOT sing overdone songs or perform overdone monologues unless it is the absolute highlight of their repertoire (unless they are way, way overdone, and then it’s a flat out no-go). If you feel Vanilla Ice Cream is the best song in your book and showcases your type and personality completely perfectly, then proceed with it with caution. (And, as others have said, check each school’s site for a possible DNS list.)

I am sorry for any confusion some of you have about the link issue after reading my post #61. All the links that currently still exist in posts on this thread ARE allowed. My post 61 is not referring to links that remain posted (such as to college websites). For sure those are allowed and if they were not, they would have been taken down. My post 61 is referring to posts/links that WERE taken down because they violated the Terms of Service. They were links to either personal sites, blogs, and/or to services, the latter of which also is forbidden in respect to promotional posts. So, my “warning” was about a post that was taken down that violated those rules. Other links are just fine!

Thank you for the clarification @collegemom.

Song choice is so interesting and sometimes I think that kids (and often, coaches) overthink it. I happened to be talking to a friend who is on the other side of the table in college auditions and in this past cycle, had a couple of surprising performances. Both with boys, not sure how much that matters, but one sang Mama Says from Footloose and another sang Wheels of a Dream from Ragtime. Both are kind of unconventional picks which would likely not be recommended by many, but these two kids apparently were accepted to nearly every school to which they applied. So, you just never know.

The only question I would have about “mama says” (which is a super fun song) is - did he use the accent? Isn’t that yet another no no? I know a kid who did a song with an English dialect, and got negative feedback

Accents are never encouraged in auditions - unless you are auditioning for a specific play that you are certain will utilize that accent or dialect, and even then…it isn’t required.

The issue is that accents are like screaming - they often get confused for real acting.

@toowonderful , I don’t know if the boy used the accent. My friend didn’t comment on that, and I think that most applicants will know that using an accent isn’t recommended audition protocol. My point was that both song choices were unconventional and yet they worked for these particular kids.

This thread made me think of the NYPL’s musical of the month offering. I highly recommend this to students and anyone else who is interested in expanding their base of theatre knowledge.
