What songs seem overdone at college auditions this year? (2017/18)

My guess is lots of Dear Evan Hansen, Anastasia (My Petersburg, In My Dreams, Journey to the Past) but I’m curious to see what everyone else thinks.

^ That would break the don’t sing anything that is currently on Broadway “rule”

Someone posted a while ago that “Right Hand Man” from Something Rotten was done a bunch this year.

Interesting question! We heard of one instance this year where two girls auditioning one after the other both sang ‘On My Way’. And of two boys who both sang ‘Maria’ back-to-back. Our D was fortunate this didn’t happen to her.

That said, it seems trying to compile a list of overdone songs is a moving target. It seems to change from year to year, which makes picking the right song even more difficult. One program head even observed that any songs-to-avoid lists one finds online are woefully incomplete…

You could here several versions of “Fly Into the Future” just walking down the hallways at Chicago Unifieds on any given day.

Oh, and many kids seemed to get “Lost in the Brass” :slight_smile:

@MTfamily1 My son sang the same song as the young man he followed at NY Unifieds. He offered to sing his other song instead, but they said no need. I can’t remember what song it was, but it wasn’t Maria.

^^^same thing happened with my S four years ago and his song was from a very old obscure musical. Imagine his surprise :slight_smile:

@zebracocoa dang that’s a good mezzo w alto belt song

@MTfamily1 You’re very right. I’m not trying to make a list, just curious to see what material might be popular :slight_smile:

@eca1401, yup - I hear you!

Incidentally, it seems there are lists everywhere when it comes to MT, not just regarding song choices. For instance, you’ve got monologues, summer programs, college programs, shows… Perhaps making a list of such lists would be fun. :slight_smile:

@eca1401 Indeed. It’s really hard to find good comedic songs for women. Fewer roles for women = fewer great total songs to pick from. It’s hard for them to not be overdone.
