I read a lot about how being from California or Massachusetts is not a good thing because there are a lot of quality applicants from there. Is there a list of under/over represented states? For personal reference, how well represented is Florida in college admissions?

I think it really depends on what schools you are looking at.

For under represented states, do a Search of this forum as this question has been asked many times. Florida is well represented in college admissions, not far behind CA and TX.

Maryland is also very well-represented, though naturally it falls behind CA, TX, and FL because of its considerably smaller population.

It depends entirely on the college…most schools draw regionally as most kids go to school within a limited distance from home. If you are in a very low population state, then you are probably not overly represented in very many places. That said, there are alot of people in California so the odds you’ll find more in one place is higher than say other kids from Wyoming but it will be relative to the location you happen to be looking in. Same for Mass. kids, I would hazard a guess that there are fewer Mass kids applying and going to schools in Washington State for instance than Mass kids going to college in Pennsylvania, or New Hampshire or some other nearby state. So on one hand yes, sheer volume impacts but the greater driver is distance.

“Maryland is also very well-represented, though naturally it falls behind CA, TX, and FL because of its considerably smaller population.”

That reason doesn’t make sense. What influence does population have on whether a state will be under-represented?

Yes it does because if a state has fewer people, it obviously will have fewer people applying to college. Therefore it will not be as well-represented as larger population states such as CA, TX, and FL.

I think he means RELATIVE representation. I.e, (population of the state)/(population of the US) = x%. If a college has higher than x% of students from that state, then it is “well-represented”, if a college has lower than x% of students from that state, then it is “under-represented”.

^How would knowing the percent representation help the OP at all?

Are you saying that a signficant number of colleges with quotas for states will have the same quota for California as for Maryland?

what about oregon?
