overseas service work

For quite a while now, I've had minor interest in pursuing an opportunity to do service work overseas. I think it will be good and valuable experience. In one of my classes, a inclass speaker once came to talk about a program that helped a village in Africa build a human powered water displacement pump to basically help the village get a working faucet.

Has anybody done something like that? If so, then I'd like to know some of the general details that I should know about. Comments too.

P.S. I've done some minor volunteering before for the resume. But now it's the real deal, I'm doing it for the experience, and I don't believe in having to starting in something small first, like the soup kitchen.

Check out the Peace Corps website. They require a college degree and a two-year commitment in most cases. (If you don’t like “roughing it,” Peace Corps isn’t for you.)

If you want short-term volunteer work, there are some church groups that do the type of work you mentioned.
