Oxford at Emory Vs. Northeastern( NU.in)

Hi everyone,

I’m a little stuck here between this two fantastic schools.

I’m an asian male from california and i’m super excited to venture out of my bubble at home and into a different part of the country…

I’m really stuck between these two schools.

When i visited northeastern I definitely felt at home. I seriously loved the chill, non pretentious vibe I got from the students. Also the way that NEU pushes the whole global citizenship, encourages us to go on these global experiences, go on co OPs and really involve ourselves, really excites me. I also absolutely LOVE boston, diversity is pretty important to me and I loved boston. Also, i’m from san francisco so I think boston resonates with me so much because of it’s similarity to San Francisco. Additionally, I’m thinking of starting the first semester away at greece, which excites me, but I guess i’m a little worried about the transition back. Also, northeastern has really really good services for people with disabilities, and that helps me out a lot.

When it comes to Oxford at Emory, obviously it is a higher ranked school. I really do love the small feel of oxford. Having a small liberal arts education seems awesome, however it’s not necessarily right in the center of urban life, which is a down side. Also i really really love the whole oxford program in general, from their mission statement to the way of life there, it feels awesome. I guess my biggest reservation about oxford is the geography of the south. Being an asian male with Tourette Syndrome, obviously the stereotypes and stuff I hear about the south concerns me… I’ve never really spent much time in the south, but if anyone can shed light on this, and specifically at emory that would me a lot. Lastly, I’ve heard stuff that oxford is looked down uppon by emory students? How true is this?

Bottom line, both are FANTASTIC schools that i’d love to attend, and i really wish I could attend both, but i can only go one place…

all insight and help is appreciated

Here’s some extra information if it really matters

ACT- 31
GPA- 3.65
Major- Economics in NEU and Arts and sciences undeclared at Oxford Emory…

congrats on wanting to escape the bubble! I wish more people would spread their wings and fly upon high school graduation (you can always go home after 4 years of college , just more mature, independent etc…)

oxford and NEU are like apples and oranges…all I can say is do not listen to stereotypes about the south.

and let me add that I doubt if you move to emory for your junior year people will be like…the new guy larry he seems nice but he went to oxford for 2 years stay clear of him.

Hey! NEU student here from FL originally.

Both, as you mentioned, are great options.

In terms of the South, some of the stereotypes are real, and general smaller incidents of racism are certainly a bit more common. I grew up on the coast of FL which is much better, but the Northeast / West Coast has a COMPLETLY different vibe. For me, I went to school up north to escape it.

That said, Emory is a very progressive and accepting school. On campus, I would expect exactly the same feel at NEU and Emory - the difference will be once you get off campus, which is a bit less relevant as Emory is more focused on campus compared to NEU.

Here’s some people talking about their NU.in experiences - the comment I linked to even specifically talks about Greece and the transition

Personally, I say go NEU of course  - NU.in is a really great and well put together program, and if you love co-op / Boston, it sounds like the right fit to me!

If you have any specific NEU questions I’d love to answer them!
