Oxford or Georgia Tech?

So I want to do business, but I know that both are really good business schools. I'm just curious in terms of college experience, college life, etc. which is better? I loved both, and now that I have both the decision is a lot harder; i mean i'd love to have sports at the college i go to, but emory's academic value is so great that i think i could sacrifice the football/basketball/etc. in order to have a great career coming out of emory. so i'm curious as to what those of you who know much more about this than me think.

ya i have the same problem as you...it boils down to in the end, would you rather have an emory degree, or a better college experience/social life. I think at both places your going to have alot of friends and college is really what you make of it, going to a few basketball games isnt going to make/ break your college experience...personally i would go Oxford but it really depends on how much u liked both when u visited.

ahirsch, i think i'm having the same realization to what it truly boils down to in the end. i think i'll still wait it out though

^ Good choice, it really depends on you & what you want out of a college...good luck with your decision :)

anyone else with thoughts? tech has made a good argument haha

how hard is it to get into the B-school? aka Goizueta.

If you can maintain a 3.4 then they accept you almost automatically from oxford into B-school.

it's not hard at all to get into goizueta. I've only been to tech a couple times but it seems fun. It's not uncommon for emory students to go to parties there. The student body is pretty nerdy, tho. If it were between 4 years at emory and tech I would actually argue emory is a better experience just because the student body is more interesting, but yeah 2 years at oxford sounds terrible to me. Don't sacrifice 2 of the best years of your life, go to georgia tech. College is about a lot of things but sacrifice isn't one of them and the degree isn't that much less than an emory degree.

ok so basically, for a guy like me who wants to do business going to Georgia Tech would be the same kind of deal as Emory?

I'm not sure I understand the question. Georgia Tech's b-school is pretty well respected. Obviously Gouizeta is better, but you shouldn't have a problem with a degree from tech. And if you're going for an MBA, it won't matter at all. Businesses only look at where you got your MBA.

College is what you make it, if you have an open mind i am sure you can make Oxford enjoyable ...if u make friends at both Oxford and Emory you can have a decent social life and sorry but there is no substitute for the Gouizeta Busines school, its top 5 in the country, 10X better than the Georgia Tech business school...obviously there are people on here who did not enjoy Oxford, but dont go because other people didnt like it...im not saying to go to Oxford but someone has to stick up for it =-)

ya I think the only way to find out which is better for me is by visiting again, maybe overnight. is it possible to spend the night at oxford?

B-school students talk about that businessweek rank as if they won like the NCAA national championship. I'm not even joking. They hung a banner in the school and the students walk around in T-shirts with the ranking on it as if they themselves had actually won something. The only thing missing is a trophy case with the laminated page on a golden stand from that issue. Honestly I wouldn't even be surprised if they did that. Yet when you look at any of the major business concentrations, gouizeta doesn't rank in the top 10 in any of them. I don't think US News even has gouizeta in the top 15 overall. And from the stories I heard it doesn't sound that great at all. Accounting majors that don't even understand the most basic principles of the tax code. Like some of them honestly couldn't tell you the difference between a Roth IRA and a traditional IRA. My 17 year old sister knows that and she couldn't tell you anything about investing. I don't even think she knows what APY stands for and all she has is a savings account.

My point is, if you don't like oxford, don't try to sacrifice two years of your life just to get in gouizeta because there's no way that's worth it. I sacrificed a year last year for a girl, but now that I realize I essentially just shortened my college years from 4 to 3 I would do anything to get that year back. College is so much fun if you allow it to be. I honestly think it's worth it to take a lower paying job for a while if it's the difference between a fun college experience and a so-so I'm just here to get a good job experience. I was wrong to plant ideas in your head about oxford and you should visit with an open mind, but make a decision based on where you think you'll have the best time.

I'll agree with el duque when he says you should choose a school based on the experience and how it makes you feel when you visit over some rankings, which may or may not be accurate.

well yeah i'm visiting again in 6 weeks so i'll have to do an investigation on the experience. So it is not that hard to get a 3.4 at oxford or it is?

I've heard its harder for most to get a 3.4 at oxford then it is to get a 3.4 at Emory because Oxford curves little to none and the teachers push each student harder individually. You'll get alot out of them pushing you, but it might not be a 3.4 GPA.

At the same time, if you thrive in a small LAC learning environment then you could very easily do well.

For the most part, Emory is easier then Oxford in terms of attaining a decent or good GPA during the first two years of college.

As far as your social life:

If you really like drinking/greek life and having a football team, Tech is your school. Emory's greek life is something you can choose to participate in or completely ignore and you'll be fine either way, there isn't really school spirit (in general a lot of people don't care much about sports at Emory).

I just realized that you are chosing between tech and Oxford which is a lose lose situation. Because there are no girls at tech, I would chose Oxford if I was in your shoes. I know thats a contradiction, but, tech is all dudes. What a nightmare.

wow this'll be tough

id go tech man, oxford isn't worth being bored outta your mind lol, 2 years thats rough...and sometimes, not often, Emory students do act in a ethnocentric manner to Oxford kids

n yes Tech has less girls, but ur in the motha effin city of Atlanta, there will be girls trust me lol
