Oxy life

Hi! I applied as a Psych major, I want to know how stressful the workload is. I have seen and read many comments about how the professors expect too much out of the students, and the workload is unbearable. Also, although I do not have trouble making new friends, I get quiet around a large group of people, I am a type of person who likes to hang out with two or three people. I get loud and talkative in subjects I like, or am good at, but I tend to not talk at all, or don’t participate in class discussions if I don’t feel close to people around me. Would I be able to fit in?

Psychology is literally the easiest major to get in college. It is also the major that pays the smallest salary and has the highest unemployment. Unless you are planning on going to med school or law school I’d say to stay clear. Workload should be about the same as any other liberal arts major.

Thank you so much! I just read so many comments on how the difficulty level is so ridiculous with heavy workload, particularly at oxy, because the professors expect a lot out of the students. Thank you again, moneybag121!!

I don’t think they expect any more than comparable schools. And at small liberal arts programs participating in class can be expected and may affect your grade. If everyone sits silent and keeps opinions to themselves it would not be expected at an LAC and will make for very dreary class time. Peer leaning is part of going to such a college and likely professors will expect you to do your part. You can learn or you can stay the same.

Now expect that college is going to ramp up for difficulty and freshman year will be an adjustment. That is how it was for my kid and there are some stresses and a learning curve. Things got better as she went on, as the difficulty increased she was able to handle it. Colleges like Oxy should be extremely supportive and your professors extremely available and you need to take advantage of that.

Thank you BrownParent! Your info helps a lot!!

How many hours of workload do students have in general? For liberal arts college students particularly?
