If I understand correctly, you can file a claim for Equifax breach even if you were not harmed directly if your info was exposed. You can get free credit monitoring or $125. No documents necessary to file a claim. Here’s the link.
With the proper documentation of time spent, funds lost, etc, ome can get $20K!
If you are like me, I haven’t lost anything and still get to have easy $125.
And I’m not one of the 147 million impacted! No money for me.
Lucky you! How could you not be impacted! 147 millionaire impacted. That’s just about every adult in the us.
I just filed for the $125 for each member of our family. Don’t forget to include your kids (my daughter was listed as included in the suit when I checked.)
I don’t know. On the link you posted it had a thing where you put in your name and SSN and it said I wasn’t impacted.
Minors can be impacted too, so not just adults. I’ll have my kids check their numbers.
OH, I tried it again and it says I AM part of the settlement group. Don’t know what happened. I’ve always had the same name and SSN.
So then I tried one of my daughters (who was over 18 at the time of the settlement and it says she’s not impacted.
I filed a claim for myself and my H. S filed a claim for himself and sent us the website for us and D to file claims. Will follow up to be sure D files her claim. We didn’t get any feedback to say we don’t qualify, only that we will get our $125 checks.
DD shows as impacted. DH and I show as not impacted. Will check again later when I’ve had a chance to speak with each of them. From the website, it looks like the settlement has not been approved yet, but if approved the deadline will be in 2020.
Thanks for the post - both DH and I were impacted but neither of our sons were.
When I did further research, I found this under the FAQs section…
Settlement Benefit: Cash Alternative Reimbursement Compensation: If you already have some other kind of credit monitoring or protection services, and do not claim the free Credit Monitoring Services available through the settlement, you may file a claim for Alternative Reimbursement Compensation for up to $125. To claim Alternative Reimbursement Compensation you must certify that you have some form of credit monitoring or protection services on the date you submit your claim form and that you will keep those services for a minimum of six (6) months.
For those who requested $125 cash settlement, how did you certify that you have some form of credit monitoring already in place?
Unfortunately I was impacted. I’ve filed my claim for $125 and 9.5 hours monitoring my reports over a 2.5 year period. My (adult) D shows not compromised.
@camom You certify simply by saying yes to a question and signing it online.
“You certify simply by saying yes to a question and signing it online.”
Yes, but I don’t feel comfortable lying about saying there is monitoring in place if there isn’t. I guess self-monitoring would count. I didn’t read the fine print.
For those claiming hours, how did you figure and prove that? My card was frauded 4x (new card numbers) between Nov 2017 and June 2018. I have the statements showing card closures with the fradulent charges. But I didn’t lose anything but some time on the phone and it being a PITA.
S16 already filed his and claimed 10 hours. His was frauded a few times over the years but mostly recently while he was studying abroad and also traveling on the weekend. It took a lot of time to straighten there one out.
I didn’t think about reviewing my credit. I do the credit score checks every month on the CC’s and also pull the freebie reports on all of us… but I’m not sure how to prove that.
Here is an easy tool to see if you were affected by the breach:
https://eligibility.equifaxbreachsettlement.com/en/eligibility
H, D1 and D2 were affected, me and D3 were not.
I am affected, wife is affected. S1 not affected. S2 I don’t have his ssn in front of me. I get notices from credit cards when there is a change in my credit score. That is credit monitoring right?
You probably have credit monitoring from your bank, from you credit card company, or from a previous breach where you were given free monitoring.
I certified and I interpret “credit monitoring” to be any service that notifies you when there is any change in credit reports. I get notifications from multiple sources – Kredit Karma – and via services offered by various credits cards. I get emails every time something changes – either a change in score, a credit inquiry, or opening of a new credit account. I wouldn’t go without something like that, but I don’t see the benefit of a paid credit monitoring service vs. a free one, except for the fact that the paid services generally offer some sort of promise or insurance to help with identity theft if it happens.
I did also get free credit monitoring from Equifax the breach first occured, through a service called TrustedID, but about 6 months ago that was terminated and I was offered the opportunity to use an Experien product called IDNotify – I did sign up and I do have that service for now. I didn’t pay anything – I don’t know if they would want payment in the future.
But bottom line… the last thing I need is ANOTHER credit monitoring service. I’ll go for the $125 – I also itemized more hours for time spent reviewing credit reports at the time of the breach, installing password management software, and changing all my passwords on all of my accounts. I claimed 10 hours.
