PA resident, $0 FAFSA EFC, 3.5 GPA, 1160 on New SAT

@MYOS1634 - I agree with the desperate action comment. They say “Only pay for the credits you take”…but it is really an up charge. It is a scam for sure and there has been little action from the residents/students. Sleeping at the wheel.

Here is an explanation from a raging chicken…lol

It looks like Cheney, Clarion, Lock Haven and Mansfield have been hard by declining enrollment. Bloomsburg, Millersville and West Chester (east part of PA) are relatively steady. Penn State has some branch campuses that I cannot see surviving long term (Shannango?), or maybe shouldn’t drain state resources?

Really the entire Pitt and Penn State thing is annoying with allowing to be considered and acting as a private. Preference to out of state funding and then using tax $$'s to support these branch campus’s while the PASSHE schools are left to choke to death. It is really screwed up when you take it all into consideration.

I meant to sy they pretend to be a public but act as a private.

I have had to point out to so many folks that Penn State is not a real state school (only state related), even someone who had their son in his second year there!

PASSHE Union Staff have voted to strike…

Sill hoping the students will join. Inorder for the PA officials to hear what a mess they’ve made by defunding higher education in the state, students and their parents must move after what’s been done to public universities. I don’t think anything else will make them move.

PASSHE…what’s to blame for tuition hikes?? Interesting take on the issue…

Latest communication to students - will strike no later than Oct 30th. Of course delays make it more difficult for our seniors to make informed decisions on pursuing PASSHE schools for 2017.

We visited IUP today. Beautiful day and very nice campus. Enjoyable presentation with a visit to a classroom, HUB, Rec center and Resident Halls - rooms were amazing. Daughter did not want to tell people she was visiting there. The swim coaches were very kind and gracious and she would be a great fit on the team. I thought it was great…she said it was “ok”…lol

I noticed that IUP went from a number ranking in US News (last year?) to an RNP this year. I don’t put tremendous stock in these, but just FYI. Also, do the previous rankings go away online? I couldn’t find the 2016 numbers, so I am going off of memory.

@Portercat - yes…I think all of the passhe have dropped a bit and some like IUP out of the number rankings. Interestingly enough…the time/money ratings put Bloomsburg University at 169 best school/ROI in the country.

@portercat - yes…IUP has dropped as have just about all of the passhe schools. Interestingly enough…in the Time/Money ratings…Bloomsburg university is rated at 167 of the best colleges/ROI in the country. I like these ratings better than the us news world report as I believe the criteria is more defined.

Just an update: My daughter received her acceptance to West Chester today; now waiting to hear from Temple. She also improved her SAT score to 1210 (though I don’t know if West Chester received the new score in time to consider it).

@kidzncatz it might be worth it to send it in case they give merit.

Congrats on the acceptance! Make sure to file FAFSA and PHEAA application and list PA schools in the top.

@mommdc We sent the new SAT score to both schools Oct. 27 but don’t know if it was received by West Chester before the decision was made. We also completed the online FAFSA and PHEAA forms (and mailed the signed PHEAA form). At this point she has applied only to PA schools (West Chester and Temple) and doesn’t plan to apply to any others now that she has the West Chester acceptance. Temple is currently her first choice (thinks West Chester is “too small”) but she may not be accepted there or it may be unaffordable.
