I live in PA and am hoping to stay in-state. My interests for now include history, economics, or psychology as majors. What would be the best schools in PA for these programs? I am open to any size really, but preferably a suburban to urban campus.

Hi, you haven’t given your scores so I can’t say what colleges might be the best for you. Also the department/school is only one factor in deciding on the best college for you :)

In terms of state colleges that offer all three majors in the setting you want, have a look at depending on your UW GPA;

3.5 + Penn State University Park, UPitt Main Campus

3.2+ Temple

3.0+ Penn State Abingdon, Millersville, Bloomsburg

Sub 3.0 East Stroudsburg, Lincoln

history and psych: dickinson, juniata both small towns

What’s your GPA? SAT/ACT scores? How much can your parents pay - if you’re run the NetPrice Calculators, are they able to afford their EFC or would you need merit aid?

For a history/psychology combo, I’d suggest looking for a Liberal Arts College.

Would you consider neighborhing states?

muhlenberg college

To throw out more names: Gettysburg and Allegheny Colleges. Gettysburg College has a summer Psych Camp. I believe Allegheny is a College That Change Lives.

Without knowing your stats, your family’s budget, and WHERE you live in PA, it’s kind of hard to make solid recommendations. Is your desire to remain in state because you want to pay in-state rates or would you just prefer to remain close to home? Pretty much any liberal arts college or university that grants a BA offers those majors.

Does your school have Naviance? It is a great tool for helping to narrow the list of possible colleges for you. You can use various refinements to help create a list of potential schools and then plan some visits and see what seems to work best for you. Best of luck in your search.

Sorry for not posting my scores:
SAT math 560, CR 630, writing 670
GPA 4.0 weighted, around a 3.7-3.8 unweighted.
I live just outside of Pittsburgh and would rather stay in-state because of tuition. I’m not sure what my parents can pay (they don’t really know anything about college) but I’m pretty sure with my family’s income I would get a fair amount of financial aid.

staying in PA provides a benefit only when applying to state universities such as those named in #2. so expand your search area. Maryland, Ohio, and NY are not far away from Pittsburgh and have some good schools. You don’t say whether you’re a senior or junior, but you’re going to need some options unless you can pull up your SAT scores. Really, the CR and Math scores. You really need to sit down with mom and dad and work this money thing out with them. It’s like the pink elephant in the room. Until you know what help your parents can provide, you won’t know where you can afford to go to school. Have that talk and then run the net price calculator at each school of interest to see what grants and financial aid each school might offer you. Talk to your guidance counselor, who probably has seen lots of students in your situation and can help you to find the right school at the right price. Good luck.

With these stats, look at:
Allegheny, Wooster, Hiram, Ithaca, Elmira, Simmons, Chatham, Earlham, Fairfield, Albion, Ursinus, Wittenberg, Susquehanna; for reaches, Muhlenberg, Wheaton (MA), St Lawrence, Franklin&Marshall, but they may like your first-gen status.
Pitt if you want a large school (but you wouldn’t qualify for the Honors College).
Slippery Rock would be a safety, West Chester a match.
Run the Net Price Calculator on EACH of these schools and choose a few from the match and reach lists that you like and can afford.
