Packaging is a major?

So I recently was accepted to MSU. I got into the mechanical engineering program. I was exploring the internet and came across MSU’s Packaging program. I know it is not really a popular major because it is only offered an MSU. Clearly it is not just putting objects into boxes. I was thinking about switching my major from mechanical engineering to packaging or possibly even double majoring. Is there anyone out there who can give me more information about packaging?

Bump because I never heard of this major and want to hear opinions on this.

Clemson University has a packaging science major. There’s a good description of the major on their website. It focuses more on the function of the packaging and not the marketing or advertising graphics.

My son put Packaging Science as his backup major on his Clemson University application. I work for a Fortune 500 packaging company about 4 hrs from Clemson (sonoco.com) with plants all across the US. There are definitely packaging jobs out there.
carolinamom is correct, Packaging Science would focus more on the packaging itself (innovative packaging or displays). Think about reclosable Oreo bags or the grocery store isle display stands. Anything that grabs the buyers attention or product packaging that displays the product in a unique way or gives it longer shelf life, freshness, etc. This could also include the insides of a shipping package. Think about the molds used to protect a product damage during shipment.

I was a double major at MSU. Engineering arts (general engineering) with a focus in business and Packaging. Packaging is a great major. MSU’s program mainly focuses on plastics and metals and determining the safest / most environmental friendly / cost effective and marketable way to protect/display a product. The packaging school is extremely active in helping with the job search - both for internships and permanent employment. I graduated in '94 and at the time it was 100% job placement. All large corporations have a packaging group. The group is usually part of the materials department or Global Supply Chain. I work for the Auto Industry and started my career off with Packaging.
