Oh yeah that.makes sense but I mean like party dresses how often does nu have those?

Well the SCHOOL probably has like… one… a year… that normal students go to. Sure, really eager and excited students might join the alumni club or do business fancy meetings, or something. I think I wore a nice skirt once to an honors meeting.

But most students will only need “nice” (meaning, not casual) clothing for two reasons- work, work-related activities (like interviews, info sessions, etc), and random things that you kind of think you shouldn’t wear jeans to so you wear slacks AND going out to a party with friends. The former will need at least one suit that eventually all Northeastern students will buy and a set of either business casual or formal outfits (usually business casual) that will mainly be for work, but can be used for other things like when your parents come to town and want to go out to a nice dinner.

Going to a party with your friends is totally up to you. I remember people my first year who’d look like they were going clubbing in NYC just to go to a frat, whereas I think I have three dresses in my closet (two of which I wore to school dances in high school). It’s just up to you. Although once you turn 21, you discover that some bars/clubs will get angry if you try to wear sneakers.
