My DD is spending the month in June taking a course in London and she asked me to find out what people recommend she bring with her, specifically clothes and personal items. Any ideas?

Here’s a general idea I think. It gives good advice ^^ I know that if I started posting the list myself I’ll probably miss something :)

Clothing wise? Generally summer stuff but you always want to be safe in the UK so make sure you bring some stuff for rain/mild temperatures.

I just came back from London. The weather may change several times a day. Summer stuff is okay, but you also need a jacket and some long sleeves. For certain reasons people in the UK do not seem to feel the cold as much as other people do. So, unless it turns out to be an unusual summer, you can leave your shorts at home. You do need very comfortable shoes. When you use the London tube you will be walking long ways.

I spent a week in London last June and there were a couple of days when it was very chilly. I had to go to Harrod’s to buy a pair of long pants! I wore layers - one day had a cami, T shirt, thin sweater and jacket with fashion scarf. But by 2:00 I was down to just the sweater and cami.

We saw everything from high fashion to funky jeans to business suits. Comfortable shoes are a must. As is a cute rain jacket. Where will she be staying? In a dorm environment? I don’t know what she’ll need personal items wise, other than her usual toiletries and of course there are drugstores etc everywhere to buy anything you don’t have.

Set her up with a good no fee credit card and/or ATM card too.

Have some layers. Right now, the weather is pretty overcast, and not hot for May. I need a jumper. It might get hotter in June, but on the other hand, we might get more torrential rain and flooding (it’s a funny drought we’re having atm!!!)

I suggest a thin raincoat (or an umbrella), a couple of jumpers (thick and thin), a normal coat, tops and trousers (jeans are good). You could put in a pair of shorts if you’re feeling optimistic (!). But honestly, if it gets so hot you need a pair of shorts or a strappy top, you could grab a cheap one or two in Primark (probably more expensive in London, but I can get a strappy top for £2 where I live in the summer). I suggest staying well away from Harrods if you value what bank balance you have! That’s really high end, not where a student would shop. Especially since London is expensive anyway. Just check the weather forecast before leaving. They are usually right about upcoming hot weather

ChocolateOrange - no-one in the US will understand the word “jumper” you know!

Hi, cupcake!

Some will understand your jumper,a pullover sweater, others will think it is the US jumper, a sort of dress that needs a top of some sort to be worn with it. I learned your use of the word via My favorite TV show, Doc Martin.

OP, I hope your D likes soccer (football).
