Paid deposit, but can't afford

I have to admit, I’m pretty impressed. Usually it takes around page 5 or 6 before someone says something like, “I have this really crazy stupid idea to go to college cheap, and I know it works because a ‘friend’ did it”. Seriously, in what universe is pretending to be an illegal immigrant the best way to do anything? Are you one of those people who thinks that immigrants get everything for free? If you can’t afford a school even with federal financial aid, how on Earth are you supposed to afford it without any aid at all?

^they do get aid in CA only. plus, wouldnt it still be cheaper if its instate with little aid than out of state with a little more aid?

No, undocumented immigrants do NOT get state financial aid in California. Simply false.

Non-citizens aren’t eligible for any FAFSA aid either, including federal student loans and grants.

Not to mention that you’d be committing academic fraud.

as for OP: it doesnt look like there is a way to get instate tuition for her

You need to actually read that article beyond the headline. The new law applies to PRIVATE financial aid only - that is, private endowment-funded scholarships at the state universities.

Undocumented immigrants continue to be ineligble for CalGrants, BOGG fee waivers and other tax-funded college aid programs - which make up far and away most of the aid available at California public universities.

Does anyone find it ironic that this ECONOMICS major can’t seem to crunch the numbers and make a reasonable decision based on the result? OP, please remind her that deferrals and/or failure to make a payment will cause the debt to balloon, and that student loan debt cannot be discharged in bankruptcy.

^^ Yes, the irony of this being an economics major did not escape me.

It’s not that surprising. There’s a big difference between thinking about majoring in something and actually understanding it – especially when you have a personal, emotional reason to force yourself not to understand it.

Basic reading comprehension is fun, isn’t it?

A family which qualifies for a Pell Grant will NOT qualify for a 3-4% interest rate.

square, I am practically on the same boat as your friend. I’ve gotten into Boston University as an international student and so didn’t receive any aid. I have a roommate, a dorm, classes, and an orientation session signed up to go. I was going to join a water polo club and get involved in so many ways. But since I can’t pay $60K per year and nobody in the planet wants to help me, I am left with no way to go to school. It truely sucks that money does hinder one’s education.
