Paper air conditioning

Engineering faculty and graduate students research using a special paper to cool buildings, reducing the expense of using air conditioning. The special paper can be recycled into more of the same special paper without losing effectiveness.

That is super interesting…especially for those of us who live in moderate climates. I wonder though if the savings in AC cost is offset by increased heating bills in the winter?

Wow—that’s very cool! (Pun intended.)

Remind’s me of my daughter’s Senior MechE project - extracting atmospheric water with the world’s whitest paint. Good results from trials in Arizona and patent pending.

The professor she worked with continues to develop it for multiple uses

This looks like it could provide similar functionality where painting isn’t feasible.

This doesn’t seem very practical. Who is going to put paper on their roof? Not just paper, but white paper. And how do the nano radiative properties stand up to the weather?

This can be developed into a roofing membrane for flat roofs; existing membranes are already light colored. The durability question can be answered by testing.

“Paper” is a misnomer. Per ACS paper (pun intended  ), the material is cellulose fibers impregnated with Teflon. Not a typical paper.
