What universal skills do you look for in an employee? and how?
Communication skills: Debate team, for example

What else?

I always advise students to look at the job search from the employer’s perspective. What can you do for me? What skills do you have that help me/ my business? That changes depending on the job you are applying for - but you get the idea. It doesn’t really matter to me that if you were in debate, what matters is if you can communicate well with others, through the written and spoken word. Think about your email name, your FB page, your twitter account name, your phone message on your machine. If you haven’t been taught how to shake someone’s hand and introduce yourself - have someone you trust teach you. All of these things create an impression about who you are and what you are about.
